Hey there modern vegans and vegan curious, it's Margaret and welcome back to ModVegan.
Today on ModVegan I want to talk a little bit about the culture of
calling people out on YouTube. And I am NOT someone who has never done this. I
have done it before on my channel. I have a couple of videos that I've made where
I have called attention to people's behavior that I felt was wrong...some of
those videos I feel good about and some of them that I don't necessarily feel
good about. I still believe the things that I said in those videos, but I also
think it's really important to create a positive culture here on YouTube - to
create a culture that is more about helping people bringing them into the
movement, helping them feel accepted and appreciated rather than making them feel
terrible. And there are times when people ought to feel terrible, and that's not
really what this is about. I think there are times when there are things that
genuinely do need to be called out that are issues where you need to divide
yourselves and distance yourselves from someone who is being extremely abusive
towards other people or something like that. But aside from that, I think we
really need to work on creating more positive culture here. And I actually
think we are. I may be disappointed after I say so in the comments on this video,
but I have to say that overall I have seen an improvement over the last few
months, and that may be because I may be spending less time going through the
comments section and everything like that, although I still try to respond to
all of the comments I just noticed more of a culture of positivity and I want to
thank my subscribers for that you guys have been amazing and I think we can all
work to create a better culture here on YouTube so that's what I want to talk
about today.
I first joined YouTube about a year and a half ago.
And at the time that I started making YouTube videos - especially vegan YouTube
videos - calling out videos, or r"esponse videos" were kind of the main way that
people communicated with each other. They would make a video and then they'd make
a video responding to someone else's video and then so on and the cycle would
just continue and I can see some value to this it's definitely good to respond
to ideas and address them. But I feel like there's also a disadvantage in that -
for one thing - we really want to be building up members of the community. We
don't want to be attacking people for their views, even if we happen to
disagree with them and this is especially important to me, because I'm
someone who has very strong opinions. I have strong views on things, but I
don't want ever to feel like people are being silenced because of things that
I've said, and while I'm still a very small youtube channel - I don't think I'm
gonna be silencing anybody - I think that it still is really important to be
cognizant of the impact that we have on our community as a whole. And so, for this
channel, from now on I'm gonna try very hard not to do anything that would be
considered really a "calling out" video - if I have anything to respond to about
something someone has said, generally I'm gonna try and avoid talking about them
by name, because I think oftentimes the issues are the really important thing.
Eleanor Roosevelt is very well known for saying that "small minds discuss people
average Minds discuss events great minds discuss ideas." And while I do not
consider myself a great mind, I prefer to discuss ideas and that's what this
channel is about. That's what I really enjoy talking about on YouTube, and I
will say that even in the past if I have been criticizing an individual, it is the
ideas that I have a problem with, it's never the person - even if the person
seems to be relatively odious - it is always the ideas that are really the
true issue at the heart of the matter. And I want to make that very clear in my
videos now. It doesn't mean that I'm not gonna be talking about other people's
ideas, and when I need to, I might refer to them specifically if it is something
that is a back and forth debate/dialogue type thing, or if it's someone who's a
thought leader in the vegan movement and I'm referring to their ideas. But I just
want to make my viewers and other people on YouTube know that this
channel is not about shaming people, it is not about criticizing people, it is
about ideas - about understanding ideas and about creating a better, modern,
compassionate world. That's really what this is about - it's about working
together to create a better world. And that's why, no matter who you are, I want
to work with you. If you're interested in making a better world, I want to talk
with you. And that's what this channel is about. I really would like to hear some
input from you guys about your attitude towards this entire thing, it's a
decision that I've come to over the last few months. You guys probably remember
that earlier this summer I made a video where I called out a specific
person, and I regretted it afterwards. Not because I regretted what I said,
necessarily - I still very much stand by some of the ideas that I was talking
about, but if I made that person in any way feel bad or even made other people
feel badly about that person, I'm really really sorry. And that was not what it
was intended for. And I'm gonna be more careful about that in the future. I think
I've done a good job on this channel so far trying to avoid drama and things
like that, but sometimes it has happened and I just want to avoid that in the
future, because I think this is such an important movement that it is very
important that we safeguard the reputation of veganism and make sure
that we are helping to build each other up, not tear each other down. And that's
what I'll be trying to focus on here. As I said I'm not gonna avoid controversy, I
will stick me still be making videos about controversial ideas controversial
topics, but I'm gonna do my very best to avoid anything that could be perceived
as targeting people or or hurting anyone's feelings because that's never
nice, and it's not something this channel is about. It's not what I'm about. I
always feel awful if I ever hurt anyone's feelings,
so that's not what this channel is about and I hope you guys will understand that.
Let me know what you think in the comment section below. Do you feel like
the environment has gotten better for YouTube over the last year or so? I
kind of think it has, but I could be wrong. So I want to know what you guys
think. Thank you so much for watching, and if you enjoyed this video, please be sure
and give it a thumbs up and subscribe, and I will see you next time, take care.
