2018 California School Recognition Program (CA Dept of Education) - Duration: 4:51.
ANNOUNCER: The happiest place on earth was the back drop
for the California Department of Education's California School Recognition program. Administrators
and teachers gathered from all over the state to receive well deserved honors in the areas
of performance and improvement. During the day attendees were able to make memories with
friends and take fun photos with the State Superintendent and for some, feel like a star.
Student entertainment was the highlight of the evening gala with Mickey and Minnie making
a surprise appearance. Melanie Schoeppe, state director of the improvement and accountability
division shared why this program was so important.
MELANIE SCHOEPPE: Educators across California are looking for
success and they're looking for bright spots so they can learn from each other. And it's
important for us as a system to call out where success and improvement is happening so we
can learn from it and we can also celebrate it. Because we all know that our educators
are working so hard every day with our families and with our students, that we as a system
step back and celebrate the growths and wins across California.
So I'm so excited because our recognition categories this year align to our school dashboard.
Our California school dashboard is part of our approach to accountability and continuous
improvement. It's a system where we look at the progress and growth of students across
multiple measures of success. We're not just looking at academics we're thinking
about the whole child. One of the most important pieces of putting together this event and
being able to highlight successes across California is the State Superintendent's involvement
and support.
TOM TORLAKSON: Well this is a wonderful opportunity for me
to personally congratulate our wonderful teachers from across the great state of California.
They come here with passion, they come here with hope and they instill that hope in our
students and give our students the skills they need to succeed. So it's just a chance
I relish to be with these teachers. They're inspiring to me, I want to pat them on the
back and I want to say thank you.
ANNOUNCER: Another thank you goes to education partner
California Casualty. Lisa Ameida, Assistant Vice President explains why the company is
a long time event supporter.
LISA ALMEIDA: They reason why we partner with the California
Department of Education is because it's a natural fit for us. We have been working
with the California Teachers Association and the Association of California School Administrators
for close to sixty-eight years. We understand the needs of our community, our schools, our
educators, the students, and this is a natural give back for us, to be good corporate citizens
and be supportive of the education community that gives so much back to us as a company.
ANNOUNCER: As a former member of that education community
Melanie Schoeppe knows how significant this type of recognition is -- especially for
school administrators.
MELANIE SCHOEPPE: As a former principal I know how hard it is
day to day to make sure we're moving closer our students goals. And being a part of a
site to receive one of these awards not only validates that hard work but also celebrates
and lifts up the community. Because really no one does this alone.
PRINCIPAL DARRIN HOLTERMAN: Our staff and community are so very excited
about receiving a California State Distinguished School Award. It's the first time for our
school to receive this award so we're very excited about that. It just validates the
hard work that our students and community put in every day to do the best for every
child.
PRINCIPAL LUCY SALAZAR: It really has a special meaning for our community
because we're so proud to be in the community of Signal Hill, we're so proud to be part
of Long Beach Unified, but it really is showcasing the efforts that our work at Alvarado Elementary
is really the work that provides the success for all students.
PRINCIPAL CAROL FONG: This award really validate all the work that
we've done over the years in working with kids who may come initially disadvantaged
but had excelled beyond expectations. It is an honor that the entire community can celebrate
around. We're very, very, glad that we have a way to demonstrate to everyone that immigrant
kids are really high achievers and our families do care about their kid's education
TOM TORLAKSON: Well these schools deserve this honor for
the hard work they've done, the excellent results they've had for building up the
esteem and confidence of the students, and engaging the parents and community in our
classrooms. It's amazing what they've done, they have come to the top when you look
at the schools across California, these we are honoring here today are exemplary -- they're
the leaders of the pack. And we-re proud of them.
ANNOUNCER: Congratulations to the 2018 California School
Recognition Program Winners.

California 2017 Wildfires Debris Cleanup Nears End - Duration: 3:39.
Seven months and one day after the October 2017 wildfires erupted in Sonoma
County [OFFICIAL] "We are 99% complete as of today, having removed 2.2 million tons of
debris which equates to nearly 314 square miles of fire area that's been
cleared." A momentous update given the magnitude, complexity and self-imposed
timeframe for the debris removal process. [OFFICIAL[ "From the beginning of this very
catastrophic, very devastating event, the response has been a one team one fight
effort." A similar accomplishment and announcement the very next day in
Ventura County. [OFFICIAL] "The county, the city, the state and the federal resources all
coming together as a team and fighting back and the the cooperation was
seamless." [OFFICIAL] "We moved more than 18,000 firefighters through our our fantastic
mutual aid system and all other kinds of assets to roll into and try to minimize
the overall losses, but there were losses." The ferocity and unstoppable nature of
these fires and the debris flows that followed in Santa Barbara created a
cleanup and recovery challenge not seen in California since the 1906 earthquake.
Combining the accomplishments of the debris removal projects from the northern
and southern California wildfires, teams have removed a total of nearly four and
a half million tons of debris from 5221 parcels. It took seven months. [OFFICIAL] "Huge
efforts working with local Public Works County offices to get mud debris moved
out and get highway 101 open, working with Caltrans, monumental job."
The Tubbs and other fires in the north... [OFFICIAL] "I want to celebrate what we've been able
to achieve but we also want to assure the people that we serve that we will
continue to advocate for them that we will be there for them."
The Thomas fire in the south... [OFFICIAL] "40 days this fire burned and the destruction
that it laid in its wake was absolutely unimaginable. The work that was done by
our first responders our government agencies was nothing less than
extraordinary. This is government at its finest." Historic wildfires in nearly
every way and historic debris removal efforts to go with them. [OFFICIAL] "I want to thank
all of those parties people behind me but more so really right down at the
local levels and the opportunity to work with the public works people in Santa
Barbara and Ventura and the city and their representatives because without
those solutions coming up from the bottom up again we wouldn't be as
successful as we are now." [OFFICIAL] "Moving forward after the debris has been cleaned up
we're gonna still continue to remain here through the process of helping our
communities rebuild." Visit our online newsroom at OESnews.com to learn more
