"Eliminative materialism" is a funny expression. It has got the two parts

to it. One is materialism, and what materialism really means in this context

is that from all we can tell at this stage, there is only the brain. That

mental processes such as remembering and learning, finding something funny, feeling

hungry, feeling dizzy, that these states that we're aware of are actually states

of the physical brain itself. And so materialism really is the idea that all

of what we think of as the mind is something that the brain does. Now, what

about the eliminative part? Well, many years ago Paul, my husband Paul

Churchland, had the idea that as neuroscience develops and as we discover

more and more about the way the physical brain works some of the psychological

categories may not fit very well onto the things that we are discovering about

the nature of the brain. Categories such as the will where you might think of

someone as having a weak will or someone as having a strong will; you might think

of the will as a particular thing in the brain.

Well, almost certainly that's not the case.

Almost certainly there are a whole lot of areas of the brain that cooperate and

integrate when decisions and choices are made. There probably is nothing which is

the will itself. And in that sense I guess you would say that the notion of

the will could be eliminated, not from everyday speech because we're

probably going to continue to talk about those things, but from scientific speech.

It was a prediction about the development of science

and it was really motivated by noticing things like this - that for a long time

people wondered about the fundamental elements and it was widely believed that

the fundamental elements that make all the stuff - the coffee and the chocolate

and the butter and the fire and everything - consisted of earth air fire

and water. Well but by the 19th century it was very

clear that those things themselves were not fundamental but were composed of

many different kinds of things. So the notion of an element profoundly changed

and it profoundly changed because of some basic ideas by Mendeleev. He

realized that the more fundamental things were oxygen, aluminum, hydrogen, tin,

gold; those were the fundamental elements and

so in that sense earth, air, fire and water

you might say God sort of heaved out or eliminated as the fundamental elements.

So Paul was really motivated by the idea that although our current psychological

categories can seem very useful to us and indeed they are, as science

progresses we may find the fit between those categories and then what we're

learning about the brain is not a very good fit. What will happen then? It's hard

to know.

What Is Reality

By Dylan Harper

The following is an excerpt from the book The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing

Who You Are by Alan Watts exploring incredible wordplay for the ultimate question of self

exploration:

When children ask me those fundamental metaphysical questions which come so readily to their minds:

Where did the world come from? Why did God make the world? Where was I

before I was born? Where do people go when they die? Again and again I have found

that they seem to be satisfied with a simple and very ancient story, which goes something

like this:

There was never a time when the world began, because it goes round and round like a circle,

and there is no place on a circle where it begins. Look at my watch, which tells the

time; it goes round, and so the world repeats itself again and again.

But just as the hour-hand of the watch goes up to twelve and down to six, so, too, there

is day and night, waking and sleeping, living and dying, summer and winter. You cant

have any one of these without the other, because you wouldnt be able to know what black

is unless you had seen it side-by-side with white, or white unless side-by-side with black.

In the same way, there are times when the world is, and times when it isnt, for if

the world went on and on without rest for ever and ever, it would get horribly tired

of itself. It comes and it goes. Now you see it; now you dont. So because it doesnt

get tired of itself, it always comes back again after it disappears.

Its like your breath: it goes in and out, in and out, and if you try to hold it in all

the time you feel terrible. Its also like the game of hide-and-seek, because its

always fun to find new ways of hiding, and to seek for someone who doesnt always hide

in the same place.

God also likes to play hide-and-seek, but because there is nothing outside God, he has

no one but himself to play with. But he gets over this difficulty by pretending that he

is not himself. This is his way of hiding from himself.

He pretends that he is you and I and all the people in the world, all the animals, all

the plants, all the rocks, and all the stars. In this way he has strange and wonderful adventures,

some of which are terrible and frightening. But these are just like bad dreams, for when

he wakes up they will disappear.

Now when God plays hide and pretends that he is you and I, he does it so well that it

takes him a long time to remember where and how he hid himself. But thats the whole

fun of itjust what he wanted to do. He doesnt want to find himself too quickly,

for that would spoil the game.

That is why it is so difficult for you and me to find out that we are God in disguise,

pretending not to be himself. But when the game has gone on long enough, all of us will

wake up, stop pretending, and remember that we are all one single Selfthe God who is

all that there is and who lives for ever and ever. Of course, you must remember that God

isnt shaped like a person.

People have skins and there is always something outside our skins. If there werent, we

wouldnt know the difference between what is inside and outside our bodies. But God

has no skin and no shape because there isnt any outside to him.

[With a sufficiently intelligent child, I illustrate this with a Mbius stripa

ring of paper tape twisted once in such a way that it has only one side and one edge.]

The inside and the outside of God are the same. And though I have been talking about

God as he and not she, God isnt a man or a woman. I didnt say it

because we usually say it for things that arent alive. God is the Self of

the world, but you cant see God for the same reason that, without a mirror, you cant

see your own eyes, and you certainly cant bite your own teeth or look inside your head.

Your self is that cleverly hidden because it is God hiding.

You may ask why God sometimes hides in the form of horrible people, or pretends to be

people who suffer great disease and pain. Remember, first, that he isnt really doing

this to anyone but himself. Remember, too, that in almost all the stories you enjoy there

have to be bad people as well as good people, for the thrill of the tale is to find out

how the good people will get the better of the bad.

Its the same as when we play cards. At the beginning of the game we shuffle them

all into a mess, which is like the bad things in the world, but the point of the game is

to put the mess into good order, and the one who does it best is the winner. Then we shuffle

the cards once more and play again, and so it goes with the world.

What If The Behemoth Was Real? - Duration: 4:52.

Hello and welcome back to Life's Biggest Questions, I'm Ron McKenzie-Lefurgey.

The Behemoth is a hulking land beast, described in the book of Job, that was said to be a

masterpiece of creation.

It has been the subject of much discussion, and even has a ride named after it at Canada's

Wonderland.

But what if this creature was not a mythical beast, or an amusement park ride, but actually

a real animal that lived to this day?

Let's explore.

If you want more What If videos, check out our "Biggest What Ifs" playlist on the

channel.

Now get ready, it's time to ask the question: What if the Behemoth was Real?

As was the case in our video about The Leviathan, this video will not discuss whether or not

the Bible is true, or whether the Behemoth was meant to be taken literally or metaphorically.

Feel free to debate it in the comments, but the following will simply be looking at a

world in which the literal interpretation of the Behemoth stories is true, and the creature

remained alive today.

The description of the Behemoth is brief, but relatively detailed.

It describes a male creature that eats grass like an ox, with strength in his loins, and

force in the navel of his belly.

He moves his tail like a cedar, with the sinews of his stones wrapped together.

And his bones are like bars of iron.

It goes on to state that he lies under shady trees and among the reeds, and drinks a great

deal from the river, with its nose piercing through snares.

Some of the wording is rather ambiguous, but this description has led to a number of guesses

as to what the Behemoth actually was.

Some believe it to simply be a large hippopotamus, or an elephant, since they seem to fit the

description and could have been present at the time.

However, the line that talks about the Behemoth moving his tail like a cedar leads many to

believe that it might not be a living animal at all, but rather a dinosaur.

Many believe that the tail, the size, and the fact that it seems to eat plants rather

than meat, point to the Behemoth actually being some sort of sauropod, like the Brachiosaurus.

Of course, if a dinosaur still existed, that would open up a whole other can of worms that

I can't get into in this video.

If you want to hear more on that, check out our video, What if Dinosaurs Never Went Extinct.

It should also be noted that others interpret this line about the cedar tree differently,

with some claiming it to refer to an elephant's trunk, or that it refers to the brush at the

tip of the elephant's tail.

Some even believe that it could be referring to the beast's penis.

This isn't as ridiculous as it might seem; the Hebrew word for "move" could also

mean extend, something that penises rather often do.

The line preceding it refers to the strength in his loins.

Plus, the following line refers to the sinew of his "STONES" wrapped together.

Good luck getting THAT image out of your head.

As you may already suspect, if this beast was real, whether it be an elephant, hippo,

rhino, or something else entirely, the implications would be far, far less worrisome than those

of the Leviathan's existence.

While the Leviathan was described as a savage, dangerous beast, the Behemoth seems to be

a peaceful, plant-eating creature.

This means that we wouldn't need to avoid certain places out of fear of the Behemoth.

It's possible that we would even live alongside it, with people making spiritual journeys

to visit the holy creature.

That said, while this beast might not attack people, that doesn't mean it would have

no effect on the world.

For one, it would seem that the Behemoth had some sort of supernatural ability.

Assuming the same specific creature mentioned in scripture was still alive to this day,

this millennia old beast would clearly be magically long-lived.

It's possible that someone would attempt to study the beast, in order to figure out

how it managed to live so long.

Of course, it's possible that this would result in an immediate smiting from God.

But it's also possible that God would allow this, as he allegedly allows other acts to

be committed due to free will.

If, by some miracle, the secret behind the extended lifespan was discovered, and found

to be replicable, this would be wonderful for humanity, at least in the short term.

People could live far longer, only dying from accidents or injuries, which would give us

far more time to do things, and could result in a more relaxed world.

On the other hand, if long life was common, overpopulation would quickly become a significant

issue, with more people being born, but far fewer people dying.

For this reason, and also due to human greed, the procedure would likely become extremely

expensive, with only a select few able to extend their life indefinitely.

However, there is one further implication that wasn't touched on in the last video.

If this Behemoth was found to be real, this would be used as evidence for the literal

interpretation of the Bible.

Many evangelical Christians would hold it up as proof, claiming that the fact that this

part was true must mean that others must be as well.

Of course, this would not be convincing to everyone; most people already accept that

the Bible does have at least some historical truth to it.

But this could act as a catalyst for certain believers to shift to a more literal interpretation

of the Bible.

And now we return to our question: What if the Behemoth was Real?

Well, unlike the Leviathan, it seems we wouldn't have to fear the Behemoth, since it would

likely be a fairly peaceful herbivorous animal, possible a large elephant or hippo.

Its existence would likely be used by fundamentalists to support their literal interpretation, but

it wouldn't stop there.

It's possible that the beast would be studied, and its extended lifespan could hold the key

to extending human life beyond our wildest dreams.

On the other hand, it could have just referred to a random elephant, or even a metaphor for

something else, in which case this would all be moot.

Scripture's pretty vague that way.

Thank you for watching Life's Biggest Questions, I hope this was interesting and informative,

What Happens When You Stop Using Shampoo - Duration: 6:07.

Hi guys. Kate here with theluxicon.co. Today I'm going try a new product for

you. In my Influenster box, I got the dp HUE ACV (apple cider vinegar) rinse and I

don't really know about this I got it for free because it's from Influenster

so I'm giving my honest review. Basically what it does is, instead of

shampooing your hair you rinse with this stuff and it's supposed to restore your

hair's pH and your scalp's and cleanse your scalp, make your hair feel really clean

without stripping the natural or oils that you do when you shampoo. So, I

feel like it's kind of like a dry shampoo and but you have to get your

hair wet so I think, I don't know, usually I use dry shampoo or I just wash

my hair and I'm not sure, we'll see. because if I were gonna get my hair wet

I think I'd just wash it but maybe I'll change my mind after I use it. I was

concerned about a few things when I got it. I don't know about putting it on red

hair because red hair fades really easily and that's always a concern of

mine any time I try a new shampoo product or something.

So I read some reviews and it does say that it's color safe. It says it's fine

to put it on colored hair so hopefully that's right and also it's apple cider

vinegar so I don't know about going around all day smelling like that. I like

the smell of my dry shampoo. A lot of people who reviewed it said that sure it

does smell like apple cider vinegar while you're in the shower but it

doesn't smell like that afterwards. I am a tough critic. I have a good nose I

will be letting you know on that. I'm gonna give it a try and I will be back

to tell you how it worked. Okay guys I tried it today I think you can tell by

the things that I was saying before that I did not want to be sold on this

product. I reluctantly said yes, that I would be willing to try

apple cider vinegar rinse when I was filling out the survey and then of

course I got picked and then it came and I was like oh my god what if this ruins

my hair what if it's not good for color, so I literally have been holding on to

this for like three weeks until now. It's the deadline I have to post it

otherwise, you know, it looks bad for me and I was waiting until it was like closer

to my hair appointment, so if it screws everything up my hairstylist can fix it.

He's gonna be so mad at me. So there you have it, I really expected to not like it

but guys I'm pretty sold. Um first of all, I didn't understand why you would need

this because, like I said, I used dry shampoo, but that adds more product into

my hair so here's what I came up with. I'm still gonna use dry shampoo when I

feel like I need to, but my hair was really greasy this morning I mean I

hadn't washed it in like, a minute. We've been crazy this week with the baby

and everything and I just think that it would be perfect for those days after

the gym, when your hair is like super sweaty and you feel like you have to

wash it but you didn't really want to wash your hair again. My hair feels

like it's light you know it's not weighed down by conditioner I feel like

I washed it. It's super soft and I can get my fingers through it. Oh that's another

thing that I was worried about. My hair is very fine and I was worried that if I

didn't put conditioner in it I wouldn't be able to get a brush through it but

the thing is that this does not really lather.

I parted my hair like they said a couple sections just kind of put it on

like that. Let it sit for a couple minutes and then I rinsed it out.

Because it doesn't really lather you don't really tangle your hair much while

you're doing it and I was able to brush my hair pretty easily so that wasn't a

factor. People did say that the smell was unpleasant and I do agree with that but

it's not a good smell when you're in the shower but it doesn't

linger. I had my husband smell my hair after it dried just to make sure

I'm not nose blind and walking around smelling like vinegar because I

got used to it. It really does not carry that scent with you after it

dries. My hair feels really soft it's shiny it looks just like I washed it and

all I did was water and rinse with this and supposedly it does not leave any

kind of product residue and it doesn't strip your hair of its natural oils like

shampooing does so maybe I throw this in place of a couple of shampoos too, not

just like gym days I think that would probably be helpful because I do kind of

struggle with that. I feel like I have to wash twice with shampoo to get

all of the chemical residue from products that I use out of my hair and

then condition and my hair is just super stripped. so it feels really good. I'm

really happy with the results and I'm definitely gonna keep using it. I

sometimes find things that I really like and I'm like okay that was

cool yeah I'll use it until it runs out. I'm gonna buy this. I'm definitely gonna keep

using it, so I highly recommend it. If you want to give this a try, hop on over

to theLuxicon.co I will have a link for you so that you can shop for it and I

will have all the information on it. Also, if you enjoyed this video, give me a like

share and follow it helps me keep making videos like this for you and if you are

watching this on youtube then go ahead and jump over to theLuxicon.co because

if you enjoyed this you're gonna really like what I do in the blog I do a lot

more than just videos. Bye guys!

Breaking News - Sam Allardyce disappointed with how Everton exit was handled - Duration: 2:36.

Sacked Everton manager Sam Allardyce admits he was disappointed at his dismissal but says he knew it was coming after reading media reports

The 63-year-old was jettisoned after less than six months in charge after a short meeting with majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri on Wednesday morning

Discontent from fans had risen to a level which had made the Goodison Park atmosphere toxic but Allardyce was unhappy with the way his exit was touted in the media well before he had received official confirmation

'I'm surprised how it came about. It seemed to be done and dusted through the media before I met Farhad,' he told talkSPORT

'I think it was out there in the open for a couple of days. That leaves you with the certainty of what was going to happen

'It was slightly disappointing. Who was involved in that I couldn't tell you, but something as delicate as that is something you want to be confidential

' Allardyce added: 'I think when it's so open in the press, from the day before, it was highly unlikely it was going to be anything else

'I prepared myself for what was being said by the press a couple of days before

'My meeting with Farhad was amicable. We conducted ourselves amicably but I expressed a disappointment with how it got out

I accept it and move on.'

Look What Happened Immediately After John Kerry Was Spotted With Iranians - Duration: 13:12.

Look What Happened Immediately After John Kerry Was Spotted With Iranians

Before President Donald Trump pulled out of the Iran deal last week, former Secretary

of State John Kerry was spotted meeting with Iranian officials as he frantically tried

to save the deal.

Now, this has literally blown up in his face in a huge way.

Right Wing News reported that Jason Osborne, a former senior advisor to Donald Trump's

2016 campaign, took to Twitter to write about Kerry's treasonous antics in Iran.

"So John Kerry just left a meeting @ L'Avenue in Paris w/3 Iranians.

A friend was sitting next to their table and heard JK blasting @realDonaldTrump.

The Iranians had a 5 person security detail and left in diplomatic vehicles.

Is he FARA registered?" he tweeted.

One of the officials Kerry met with has since been identified as Kamal Kharzai, Iranian

politician, and diplomat, as well as Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs from August 1997

until 2005 These meetings have completely backfired,

however, as an Iranian organization is now offering a $100,000 reward to any person who

bombs the newly opened U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.

The group offering this bounty is the Iranian Justice Seeker Student Movement, which is

distributing posters calling for an attack on the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, which has

been opposed by Palestinian and Iranian officials as an affront to the holy city.

"The Student Justice Movement will support anybody who destroy the illegal American embassy

in Jerusalem," the posters state in Farsi, Arabic, and English.

There will be a "$100,000 dollar prize for the person who destroys the illegal American

embassy in Jerusalem," the poster continues.

Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon adviser, explained that terrorism of this nature is

embedded in the Iranian regime's hardline stance.

"Unfortunately, terrorism directed toward diplomats and embassies has become a central

pillar of the Islamic Republic's culture," Rubin said.

"Terrorism is lionized in Iranian schools.

This bounty is more the rule than the exception.

To blame Washington or Jerusalem is to blame the victim and give terrorists a veto over

U.S. policy."

It's disturbing that Kerry tried to save a deal by meeting with officials from a nation

that is so blatantly threatening the U.S.
