California Rancher Kevin Kester Shares His Personal Death Tax Story - Duration: 2:27.

My family operation has been here on the Central Coast of California since the 1860s.

I represent the fifth generation of my family to ranch here in the Parkfield

area and I'm happy to say we have two grandchildren now and they represent

potentially the seventh generation if they choose to ranch here.

Without a doubt the the greatest challenge that keeps me up at night is

trying to figure out how to pass the ranching operation - our family operation -

on to the next generation or generations. Back in the early 1990s my grandfather

passed away and it created a taxable event with the federal government as it relates

to the estate tax and the death tax. So for a period of more than ten years

my family struggled to figure out how to pay about two million dollars that we

owed the Internal Revenue Service, the federal government, and so over that ten

year plus period the impacts were severe on my family of trying to figure out how

to pay that obligation without selling the ranch or selling parts substantial

parts of the ranch. And what that entailed was we had to cut back

expansion of our family ranching operation, I could not hire employees, I

could not make capital improvements, buy equipment

I couldn't even - for my family - had to make sacrifices, we couldn't spend money in our

local communities like we should. Couldn't even - we had to cut back on even personal

things like going out to dinner, going the movies, and all those kinds of things

which has a financial impact on our local communities. If politicians want to help

further the breakup of ranches and farming families and communities, then

just keep the tax code the way it is. The current tax code is just having an

opposite effect. It's just leading towards more fragmentation of farms

and ranches, which is not good for the environment or our ranchers and farmers.
