G'day mate!
Today, I'm going to show you how I make my California Style Vegemite Sandwich.
For those of you who have ever wanted to try vegemite,
or for those of you have have tried it and haven't liked it,
this is a great way to be introduced to vegemite.
My name is Ramiro Ortiz and you're watching We Suck At Cooking.
[Intro music]
These are the ingredients you're gonna need for this recipe.
An 1/8 of a teaspoon of Italian seasoning.
An 1/8 of a teaspoon of black pepper.
An 1/8 of a teaspoon of garlic powder.
Half an avocado.
A 1/4 teaspoon of vegemite.
You can make that an 1/8 of a teaspoon if you don't really like salty foods.
Half a tomato.
A tablespoon of butter.
A slice of cheddar cheese.
Also Swiss works very well.
And 2 slices of wheat bread.
Our first step is going to be to cut our tomato.
Put it on its side.
Put the blade right in the middle
and just slowly saw through.
I don't need many slices so I'm going to go ahead and work with the thinner side.
Thickness is gonna depend on what you want.
I'm gonna try to make them not too thin.
Two or three slices should do me.
Remember to be very careful when cutting
so as to not cut your fingers.
Next we're going to cut our avocado vertically all the way around.
We're gonna start by slicing through until our knife hits the seed
and then following around the circumference.
And you just twist.
To get our slices, we're just gently going to cut in.
Make sure to be very gentle.
You can feel as the skin gets cut.
There should be a slight sound sort of like paper tearing.
Now that our avocado has been sliced,
we simply need to peel back the skin.
Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
As usual, we're gonna lightly toast our bread
with our toaster oven,
but of course, if you have a conventional toaster, that works just fine.
And now we wait.
Alright guys, with our bread toasted,
we're gonna start putting our sandwich together.
We're gonna start by spreading some butter on each side of our toast.

Are you doing it?!

With our bread buttered, we're gonna start putting in our vegemite.
Now the thing with vegemite is that a little bit will do you plenty.
I'm gonna start with a bit of cheese
and then follow that up with a couple slices of tomato.
One and two.
Then I'm gonna add in
a pinch or two or three
of my garlic powder.
Followed by a pinch or two of black pepper
And similarly Italian seasoning.
I'm gonna follow that up with one, two, three,
and if I can manage it,
four slices of avocado.
I'm gonna add in the rest of my garlic powder.
I'm gonna come in with my black pepper
and finish it off with the Italian seasoning.
And there you have it.
My California Style Vegemite Sandwich.
You can pair yours with some French fries, some curly fries,
some chips,
or you can pair it with some baked zucchini fries as I'm doing here.
I like to accompany it with a little Australian ginger beer
for some authentic Australian flavors.
Alright guys, I've had enough of a wait for this
so I'm gonna start digging in to this sandwich.
Mmmmm
Nice and crispy from the outside in.
Then soft and fresh and juicy.
You can really taste the tomato and the avocado.
And they are perfectly complimented by the saltiness of the vegemite
and the seasonings.
Giving it a nice robust flavor.
And of course, it pairs perfectly with that ginger beer.
It's a wonderful blend of Australian flavors and California style culinary conventions.
I absolutely recommend you try this.
This is a great way to get introduced to vegemite
because it's not overpowering.
It simply compliments the sandwich and really brings out the flavoring.
