a new look for our raised beds, some things for you to do in your garden this month
plenty of harvests and a lot more and today's episode of California gardening
we will begin with the garden tour we will look at what harvests we made this
month we will then look at some things to do in your garden and finally we'll
look at some cool gardening products so let's begin with the garden tour
starting with the raised beds and the first raised bed we have the black Cobra
pepper that's growing pretty well now and next to that we have the onions
these are the onions that were grown from seeds and they have grown pretty
well now followed by the tomatoes we have about five tomato plants in this
bed and in the recent couple of weeks they've really taken off this bed is
being prepared for the okras that I've just sowed and then we have the potato
bed where we have all these potato plants growing and they have some kind
of yellowing but we'll look into that later
in the next bed we have the taro root plants and the Malabar spinach followed
by the onions these are the onions that were grown from sets and they have been
growing pretty well so far and in the bed next to that we have the
eggplants this is the lista de Gandia eggplants and they have grown pretty
well and right behind that we have the
cayenne pepper plants this chili plant has been over wintered and is growing
pretty well
and then we have the cabbages the cabbages are right next to this bed and
once these cabbages are harvested I will plant some more summer vegetables here
but they're all looking very good now and that completes the tour of our
raised beds
let's begin with the tour of the front containers we have the pineapple plant
that's flowering now followed by the tomato plant as you can see here
producing some Tomatoes now followed by the sunchokes plant now I'm really
interested to see how this plant grows and as you can see here this plant has
become quite tall and is growing really well and I think we still have to wait
till the plant produces flowers and then completes its lifecycle and then harvest
the sunchokes next to that we have the okras the Nombo giant okra followed by
the Ivy gourd which has started greening up now as you can see here as the
weather is warming up it's getting greener and finally we have these Swiss
chard plants which are ready for harvest in the containers that are at the back
we have strawberries we have the other pineapple plant which has flowered very
quickly and you can see here it's forming the pineapple now we have some
more strawberry plants followed by some herbs like basil this is the thai basil
and then we have the mint we have the sweet mint that's growing very well and
tomatoes we finally have our first tomatoes that have become red and will
be ready for harvest very soon and on the back
the curry leaf plant we have the cayenne pepper the chilies that were
overwintered and right next to that we have the tumeric plants and they are
growing very well now in this container
the mulberry tree that's right next to that has produced a lot of mulberries
this year and I'm really starting to see a lot of production from this plant now
and they're absolutely delicious we have another overwintered pepper plant this
is the thai pepper plant of the Thai chilies we have another curry leaf plant
and then we have the Meyer lemon plant the Meyer lemon tree has been growing
very well this year so you can see here it's producing a lot of fruit and moving
on to our fruit trees the gem avocado has been pruned this year as you can see
here it's growing pretty well it has started producing new shoots and moving
on to the other fruit trees we have the Dancy tangerine tree that has also
produced a lot of fruit small fruits
the Mexican guava tree has become very tall and although it doesn't have a lot
of space to grow here just going pretty well next to that we have the Bearss lime
or the Persian lime and it has produced a lot of small limes which will grow
into bigger lime soon next to that we have the pomegranate tree
this was also pruned very heavily this year but you can see it started
producing some flowers those red flowers that you can see so I hope to get some
pomegranates this year from this tree and next to that we have the Arabian
guava tree which was again pruned this is a full size tree so I have to prune
it like every two years or so but if such delicious guavas I haven't seen any
flowers yet I hope to see them very soon though the Washington Navel orange tree
has also grown much better this year compared to the last few years and you
can see the small oranges being formed I did get an excellent yield last year
and I hope to get one this year too the Moringa trees are growing well
and they also had been trimmed this year and right next to that we have the Raja
Puri banana tree this Raja Puri banana tree has been producing bananas and
they're absolutely delicious and as you can see here this banana plant is
producing a lot of baby banana plants right next to it and that's how you
propagate these into multiple plants and that completes the tour of our fruit
trees we will take a quick look at what's there in a greenhouse we have
some okra seedlings that are emerging now we also have some tropical plants or
subtropical plants like curry leaves basil that are growing in this
greenhouse some carom plants as well as you can see here and we also have some
spearmint plants that are growing very well these were grown from just twigs
got from the grocery store
and now moving on to the harvest section beginning with cabbage so we were
growing a lot of cabbages both in our raised beds as well as in the whiskey
barrel containers and as you can see here our cabbage yield has been
excellent this is probably the last set of winter vegetables we are harvesting
and as you can see cabbages grew through spring so you can keep harvesting them
till springtime and as you can see here we did get some very large cabbages
I did not use any kind of insecticides or pesticides for our cabbages so you
can see a few holes around the cabbage leaves but I was very happy with the
yield and although I did not use any insecticides or pesticides I it really
ignored all the holes in the leaves rounded
if you're growing organically just make sure you wash your produce very
well get rid of all the dirt and anything else on the plant but avoiding
insecticides is one of the best things you can do these are extremely natural
treated without any pesticides or insecticides very delicious and very
healthy for you and as you can see here pretty good sized cabbages and we also
harvested one cabbage from our whiskey barrel container as you can see here it
pretty much takes up the whole whiskey barrel container just this one cabbage
plant and the harvest was really good as you can see here
moving on to the next harvest we harvested a lot of chilies these are the
kind peppers that we overwintered from last year and this is a great variety of
cayenne pepper these seeds were given to me by one of
my friends and it has healed it very good peppers and it continues to yield a
lot of hot peppers or hot chilies from this plant so overall it was great
harvesting these chilies and as you can see here as soon as the weather changes
this pepper plant that was dormant is now growing and is producing a lot of
these chilies that we can harvest now chilies and peppers are actually the
same plant chilies are usually the hotter peppers
so like cayenne pepper or serrano peppers these are all hot pepper
varieties and they're also called Chili's so it's essentially the same
plant I did have one of our viewers mention that some people are allergic
to chilies and I'm not really sure about that I could not find any such
information now moving on to the next harvest which
is the hyacinth beans the hyacinth beans had grown very well and this is
the last harvest for the hyacinth beans the hyacinth bean plant has yielded
very well but it's now time to end this journey and move on to the other
vegetables our mulberry plant has yielded a lot of
mulberries this year and this mulberry plant has been growing in a container I
was able to prune these plants and as you can see here the mulberries are
looking very delicious the ones that are completely black are the sweetest ones
the ones that are not too black are basically like dark red or brown in
color are the more tart ones which are not very sweet so as you can see here
you can harvest a variety of mulberries and these are very small fruits but as
the plant has grown it has yielded so many mulberries that it now is becoming
a very productive plant so for those of you who haven't grown mulberries it's a
very easy plant to grow you can propagate it easily via cuttings
and that's how I have propagated this plant and it's been a while since we got
this mulberry cutting from one of her friends and we now have two mulberry
trees growing it's an excellent plant to grow which will yield a lot of berries
moving on to oranges the Washington Naval orange was the last one that we
harvested the Washington Naval orange tree is now flowering and producing
fruits for the next season
and now moving on to the harvest of our taro roots so the taro plant yields not
only great leaves as you can see here but also the taro roots the taro roots
are the most edible portion of the plant and it's very commonly used in a lot of
cuisines it's very starchy and for those of you
who haven't tried taro root it tastes like a nuttier version of potatoes and
it's very easy to grow this plant at home we have been using this large
container where we planted some taro roots that we got from the grocery store
and as you can see here it's very easy to grow this plant all you need to do is
provided some good rich organic soil and then after about four to six months you
can harvest your taro roots and they will look excellent as you can see here
so from just this one container we were able to harvest a lot of taro roots as
you can see here and taro roots have very good nutrition value it is very
nutrition dense and it's also extremely delicious there are a lot of queue
scenes you can look up this is also very popular in states like Hawaii where it's
used to create a lot of peas a lot of good dishes so after
harvesting the taro root I just removed all the roots that are attached to the
plant and then after washing it this is how it looks like and this is an
excellent yield the taro roots are of very good size here as you can see and
the best part is that once the taro root has been harvested
you can actually plant the tops or even some other small taro roots to create
newer plants and now let's move on to the things for you to do in your garden
this month now this bed that you see here was very dry it wasn't retaining
moisture the soil was quite dry so we went ahead and amended this soil this is
something that you will see very often in your garden you will have some beds
or some areas that are not really moist and the soil is not retaining enough
water so how do you solve this problem what you see here is amending the raised
bed soil with something that retains moisture and what retains moisture there
are some elements in your soil like peat moss or coco coir as the less compost
that will help you retain a lot of water in the soil so what we have done here is
we've prepared this mix with peat moss and compost and what
is just layering the soil with this mix on top now what will happen is once this
mix is on the top the peat moss and the compost will hold moisture and it will
help the plants to use that moisture very well and what I'm also doing is I'm
adding some fish fertilizer here I just eyeball it and add it to this watering
can and then add some water and what I'm going to do is use this fish emulsion
mix to enrich the soil that we just added to the raised bed so it's a
two-step process one step is to enrich the soil by adding peat moss and compost
and the second step is to add this fish emulsion fertilizer to the raised bed so
that it adds a lot of beneficial bacteria and it kind of activates the
soil it activates life in the soil and when you activate all these
microorganisms in your soil the nutrients to your plants are much
readily available and they will start to grow very well and if you're seeing
nutritional deficiencies in your plant do follow this method and see how it
goes it's a very effective method and after
application you can see that the texture of the soil is vastly improved the soil
will now start retaining more moisture and you can even work the soil end into
your raised bed if you want to the next thing to do is composting now I know a
lot of you who make your own compost just make sure you use the dry material
and the wet material as you see here in layers to make your compost so what I
usually do is add in a layer of grass clippings grass clippings is a great
addition to your compost bin and then you add some your food and vegetable
scraps and for your dry matter you can add like leaves I had some leftover
potting mix that I added here add some dry leaves as well in there so the idea
is to make sure that your compost has a good mix of dry material as well as
wet material and by doing that you can create very good quality compost it's
pretty much free for you just using scraps and grass clippings and within no
time you will have some great compost
we are also protecting our raised beds by attaching some chicken wire along the
side we just stapled some chicken wire along the sides of the raised beds and
the idea is to protect it from critters and rodents
and now let's move on to some gardening products at your local Lowes you can
see that there is a salad citrus tree for about $159 you get a root stalk with
oranges lemons
oranges again different variety and tangelos so basically a variety of
citrus tree is grafted onto the same root stock this is a great option if you
want to buy one tree that will produce a lot of different varieties of fruits and
although they are expensive I think it's a great option if you're short on space
and want a variety of fruits from the same plant
now this garden center also has the Moringa plant and I was able to see
quite a few Moringa plants here it's a superfood it's a great plant to grow in
your garden so I highly recommend that you pick one up if you don't have the
Moringa plant
and they also had some great fruit trees like the pomegranate this is the same
variety that we are growing here and they also had some dwarf nectarines
and now let's look at some fabric grow bags one of our YouTube viewers was kind
enough to meet me when I was in Northern California last month and gave me these
grow bags these are 25 gallon grow bags from 24/7 garden and they're excellent
quality grow bags
they are pretty similar to a whiskey barrel sized container and they can hold
25 gallons of soil and they're also plastic free so for those of you who are
looking to grow your food and plastic three containers these grow bags are a
great option and I would really like to thank Kumar YouTube viewer that has
gifted us this grow bag set there are a set of five grow bags
and we'll hopefully put it to good use so what I have done is I've filled up
most of these grow bags with some ready to use potting mix as you can see here
and then for the
bags I have actually created my own mix by mixing peat moss compost and perlite
and you can always add in more peat moss if you see that the mix is dry and as
you can see here this is the mix we created and it looks great so there we
have it folks that was our episode on the California garden for the month of
April if you like this video do hit the like button and if you're not already a
