They plunged a pole into the frozen ground, probing for an important measurement: the first snowpack of the year

 The result wasn't perfect, but it's an OK start, officials said: 25.5 inches deep

That's 80% of average to date, and 36% of the April 1 average in that location, said John King, a water resources engineer with the state department
