RIP A California Highway Patrol officer was struck

and killed by a suspected drunk driver when he crashed into the officer's patrol vehicle,

which was parked on the side of the Interstate.

It happened on Christmas Eve, officials said.

Officer Andrew Camilleri, 33, was in the passenger seat of a parked patrol car when the vehicle

was hit around 11:20 p.m. Sunday on the San Francisco Bay Area highway.

Camilleri was in the patrol car with Officer Jonathan Velasquez, who was sitting in the

driver's seat and suffered minor injuries in the crash, Fox News reported.The 33-year-old

officer was transported to St. Rose Hospital in Hayward where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Camilleri was married and had three children who expected their father to come

home and help them open Christmas presents, said Asst.

Chief Ernest Sanchez at a news conference Monday morning.

Assistant Chief Ernest Sanchez said the driver was traveling at a high speed on Interstate

880 when he slammed into the back of the patrol car parked on the right shoulder.

The crash shut down southbound lanes of the highway for hours.

The California Highway Patrol said the driver who struck the officers' vehicle was 22

years old and under the influence of alcohol and possibly marijuana.

The unidentified driver was also returning from a party.

Camilleri began his career with the California Highway Patrol just last year on August 27,

2016, officials said.

He leaves behind a wife and three children who expected him to be home to open Christmas

presents, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"We offer our thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and colleagues as we collectively

mourn this heartbreaking tragedy," the CHP Golden Gate Division said Monday.

"We come to you with broken hearts and also anger — not just because we've lost one

of our own," Sanchez said.

"The number of fatalities we've had in the Bay Area, just in the last couple of weeks

involving people who have chosen to drive under the influence of alcohol and are suspected

of marijuana use — you'll find too many tragedies have happened."

"Today, we lost not only a hero, but a son, a brother, a husband and a father to a senseless

act and an irresponsible decision," said Capt. Tim Pearson, who commands the CHP's

Hayward area office.

"Andrew was drawn to this profession due to his courage, integrity and desire to serve.

Andrew was a great man who loved his job and loved his family."

Acevedo after California officer death: 'Too many' dead from DWI

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo on Christmas Day condemned intoxicated driving as he mourned the death of a California Highway Patrol officer who was killed by an impaired driver.

Andrew Camilleri Sr., 33, was a patrol officer for a year and a half, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

He was killed just before midnight on Christmas Eve.

Another officer was injured.

A wife lost her husband and three children lost their father because of a person driving under the influence today, Acevedo wrote on Twitter.

Too many lives are cut short by DWI..

Today is not a holiday for the Highway Patrol.

Today is about a tragic loss of one of our own, one by the name of Andrew Camilleri, who we will consider a hero now and forever, CHP Assistant Chief Ernest Sanchez said at a news conference Monday.

Sanchez said the driver who hit the officers, a 22-year-old Hayward man, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

He is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, specifically marijuana.

The drivers name has not been released.

I come to you with a broken heart, but also anger, Sanchez said.

This person chose to drive while under the influence of alcohol and also drugs, and this needs to stop..
