JEFFREY MILLER: We kind of got together and talked
about a few things with my command staff
and then I started calling engineers in.
And then the fire came through the neighborhood right
behind us.
KELSEY CLAYBROOK: The street was burning,
there were flames along the highway here.
ROBIN ALLEN: And off in the distance
we could see buildings starting to burn.
So we knew it was getting closer to us.
KELSEY CLAYBROOK: And the wind was very difficult.
It was very, very hot.
It was hard to see what you were doing.
The smoke would come your way.
ROBIN ALLEN: Sometime between 2:00 and 4:00 AM, I walked down
and the firestorm was around us.
And I got our facilities guys and security.
JOSEPH BILLS: Heard overhead that there
were embers on the rooftops.
So we grabbed fire extinguishers, me
and security and engineering.
We went up there and I couldn't tell you
how many fire extinguishers we went through.
But I know there was pictures of some of them
that were pretty much exploded because we dropped them
where they were out outside.
KELSEY CLAYBROOK: I'm sure there's planning for it,
but for all my practice and thought,
we're thinking about the staff and the patients.
JOSEPH BILLS: At one point there were
five of us kind of putting out the spot fires.
And then when it got too intense and too smoky out there,
we just said, we got to go.
JEFFREY MILLER: The fire department was here.
And they were trying to stay ahead of the fire
but it pretty much overtook us in a few minutes
and got down along the southeast side of the property
where well system is.
So I had to get them out to the well
heads to put that fire out, because if we
would have lost that, we would have lost everything.
ROBIN ALLEN: There was at one point
where the fire came very close to our medical gas tanks,
probably within 10 feet of them.
KELSEY CLAYBROOK: Grabbed myself,
a registration employee, some environmental services
employees, you know it's a group effort.
We grabbed extinguishers and radios and I ran them outside.
JEFFREY MILLER: We're out there with garden hoses
and five-gallon buckets and shovels.
ROBIN ALLEN: They had the golf cart with water on it
and they were surrounding the building
and just putting out spot fires.
JOSEPH BILLS: I wasn't really terrified or anything
just more or less I just wanted to get everybody safe
and get out of there.
JEFFREY MILLER: We were able to save the entire facility.
The MOB got a couple of scorch marks on it,
but that was about it.
Unfortunately the Shea House on our property
that the NICU families get to stay in,
completely burned to the ground.
JOSEPH BILLS: It was a very chaotic position
to be put into for everybody.
And I think we all got through it really well.
And I couldn't imagine it going any better than it was.
KELSEY CLAYBROOK: We're back on the right track.
It feels good.
You know, everyone's in the building again
and this is what we're supposed to be doing here.
WILLIAM CARROLL: The team that we have here was phenomenal.
And really I know the stories are coming out,
but that the acts of individual courage,
the stoicism that was displayed that night,
really truly remarkable.
