McKayla Maroney Sues USA Gymnastics and US Olympic Committee, Alleges Use of Settlement

to Conceal Abuse, McKayla Maroney has filed a new lawsuit aimed

at USA Gymnastics, Michigan State University and the United States Olympic Committee, claiming

the two entities used a confidential settlement to cover up alleged abuse by former national

team doctor, Larry Nassar, and were negligent in preventing him from sexually abusing minor

gymnasts.

In the lawsuit filed on Dec. 20 in Los Angeles, the 22-year-old Olympic gold medalist named

Michigan State University, the United States Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics and Larry

Nassar as defendants in suit and is seeking damages for a handful of claims, including

sexual harassment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, breach of fiduciary

duty and negligence.

She has requested a jury trial.

According to the court documents obtained by E! News, Maroney alleged that MSU and USOC

knew that Nassar was performing "purported medical treatments" on minor children, including

Maroney, and "knew that Nassar had complaints pertaining to these purported medical treatments

(which were disguised, sexually abusive acts) but nonetheless allowed Nassar to continue

working for USAG and...USOC...without any prior warning, protection, or remedial steps

taken to limit his access to minor children," the documents state.

"Despite having the power, authority, and mandate to do so, the Defendants USOC and

MSU never intervened to discipline Nassar, ensure that USAG and Nassar were following

USOC rules and mandates, never called law enforcement for allegations made against Nassar,

and through the express disregard for the safety of minors, allowed Nassar to continue

in his position of trust, power and access to McKayla Maroney as well as numerous other

elite minor athletes who competed with McKayla Maroney," the papers read.

In the documents, Maroney also claimed Nassar was informally disciplined by USAG for taking

an "inordinate number of photos" of young gymnasts, but was allegedly not further investigated

or reported to law enforcement, parents or gymnasts.

In the lawsuit, the gymnast also alleged she was "forced to enter into a confidential [settlement]

with Defendant USAG" in December 2016, which was, according to the documents, in violation

of California law.

At the time, she claimed she was suffering from psychological trauma as a result of Nassar's

alleged abuse and needed funds to pay for treatment.

She claimed in the lawsuit that the confidentiality provision in the settlement was forced upon

her so that "the defendant USAG could further conceal and shield from public scrutiny, outside

investigation, and law enforcement the true nature of of Nassar's horrific sexual abuse

of minors...the Plaintiff alleges that Defendant USAG had a plan to keep the sexual abuse of

Nassar quiet, and allow Nassar to quietly leave USAG, further silencing his victims."

However, USA Gymnastics told E! News in a statement that the "concept of confidentiality

was initiated by McKayla's attorney, not USA Gymnastics."

"USA Gymnastics learned today from media reports that McKayla Maroney has filed a lawsuit against

it, the United States Olympic Committee and Michigan State University related to abuse

by Larry Nassar.

That filing apparently seeks to nullify provisions in a prior settlement agreement between USA

Gymnastics and McKayla.

Contrary to reports, the concept of confidentiality was initiated by McKayla's attorney, not USA

Gymnastics," USA Gymnastics said in a statement.

"In 2016, McKayla's attorney at the time, Gloria Allred, approached USA Gymnastics,

requesting that the organization participate in a confidential mediation process.

USA Gymnastics cannot speak to the mediation process, which is confidential and privileged

under California law.

The process culminated in a settlement agreement that included a mutual non-disclosure clause

and a mutual non-disparagement clause.

The settlement in 2016 was in accordance with state law, despite what has been alleged.

At all times, McKayla was represented by Allred, a California-based attorney, who actively

negotiated and approved the settlement agreement signed by McKayla," the statement continued.

"Although USA Gymnastics is disappointed by today's filing, we applaud McKayla and others

who speak up against abusive behavior -- including the despicable acts of Larry Nassar.

We want to work together with McKayla and others to help encourage and empower athletes

to speak up against abuse.

USA Gymnastics new CEO Kerry Perry is eager to speak personally with McKayla to hear her

ideas on how to move the sport forward and to discuss the many safe sport enhancements

that have already been implemented at USA Gymnastics."

Breaking: UN URGENT Vote on President Trump Jerusalem Decision, US Embassy Move in Israel 12/21/17 - Duration: 0:59.

The measure, drafted by U.S. ally Egypt, urges nations to support U.N. resolutions dating to 1967 when Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordan, that call for Jerusalem's status to be decided through negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Thursday to repudiate President Trump's controversial declaration recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Trump threatened to withhold aid in retaliation for a vote condemning his position.

The U.N. body voted 128-9 to declare Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital "null and void." Thirty-five nations abstained.

Israel says a united Jerusalem will remain its capital, while Palestinians want it to cede East Jerusalem as the capital of a future, independent Palestinian state. Only a handful of countries recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, while most others maintain embassies in Tel Aviv.

N. Korea to seek talks with U.S. once it has perfected ICBM re-entry technology: Seoul think tank - Duration: 2:19.

Despite being cast into the diplomatic and economic wilderness,... North Korea has made

some remarkable technological advancements over the past year,... building on their decades

of tests.

So what's to come after the Hwasong-15 ICBM North Korea launched last month?

That's what analysts at a think tank in Seoul have been trying to figure out.

Lee Jeong-yeon has the details.

With North Korea's latest test of its Hwasong-15 ICBM in November, the world was left speculating

what its next move would be.

A South Korean think tank has attempted to provide some answers.

In its report "Outlook on International Affairs for 2018," the Institute of Foreign Affairs

and National Security says the biggest task left for the regime is to perfect its missile

technology, with the remaining part being re-entry technology.

(Korean) "A successful missile launch must have three

things: launch trajectory, position control, and re-entry.

North Korea's missiles currently have the first two, but not re-entry."

But why is re-entry technology so important?

(Korean) "Re-entry is what allows a nuclear warhead

to withstand extreme heat and pressure when passing through the Earth's atmosphere.

Without it, the missile would not be able to drop nuclear weapons onto its target area.

That's why it's so important."

The expert added that there are two possible scenarios for the future.

One, North Korea doesn't succeed in its re-entry technology next year, in which case they will

continue testing ICBMs.

But the second scenario is what's drawing the most attention.

If they do succeed, they will most likely seek disarmament talks with the United States.

(Korean) "North Korea will most likely demand to be

recognized as a nuclear state and to keep a certain level of nuclear technology, in

exchange for limiting their ICBM capabilities, enough to attack neighboring countries."

The expert added that the timeline in which this would happen could vary from a few months

to a few years.

But it is only a matter of time.

And when that time comes, the U.S. and the regime's neighboring countries such as South

Korea and Japan must decide on how to respond to North Korea's request to be recognized

as a nuclear state.

Lee Jeong-yeon, Arirang News.

How did Internet and Cable Companies Get Regional Monopolies in the United States? - Duration: 10:50.

>> ALEX: Hey guys, I'm here watching some South Park, let's get technical.

The cable provider that allows me to see this episode of South Park on my TV right now is

Comcast.

If, instead of wanting to watch South Park, I wanted to watch, say, BoJack Horseman, on

Netflix or Bo Burnham on YouTube, I'd need to use an internet connection provided to

me by Comcast.

Comcast is my only option for my cable provider or my ISP, and, if you live in America,

you probably don't many options either.

The Federal Communications Commission reports that 96% of Americans have 2 or fewer options

when it comes to cable broadband ISPs.

A matter of fact, people have even made maps on what your ISP likely is based on the state

you live in.

Not to mention, with all of the Net Neutrality stuff going on right now, it's got me thinking,

how did we even get here in the first place?

Today, let's answer How Internet and Cable Companies got Regional Monopolies in the United

States.

To find out, let's do some time traveling.

>> ALEX ON SET: In 1948, the first cable systems in the US were put into place in parts of

Arkansas, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, but cable didn't really take off until the 1970s and

80s.

Why'd it take so long for it to get popular?

2 reasons.

First, the FCC put a ton of restrictions on cable in its early years because og broadcast

networks felt threatened by cable companies.

me just sitting there.

AAH!!

Before cable, networks themselves would just send a signal to your TV, but, when cable

came along, networks viewed them as a middleman who stole their shows and then forced people

to pay for content they were already getting.

So, after a lot of complaining, the FCC eventually put in rules to restrict cable.

And a lot of them.

So the FCC won't let me be, let me be me so let me see.

And cable did see.

*OFF SCREEN* Wait what does that mean?

I don't know, I'm just trying to make a good transition.

In 1972, after the public voiced disapproval of all the cable regulations, the FCC started

to loosen those regulations.

This was the first reason cable took off in the 70s.

The other?

Well, it was actually HBO... but it wasn't their programming, it was their technology.

HBO was also founded in 1972, and they took advantage of the loosening of

FCC restrictions, specifically, the 1975 ruling that cable companies could use satellites

for their broadcasting.

This tech would work by sending a signal from a satellite to massive 30-foot dish-shaped

antennas across the country, which would then send the signals through the cables and to

your home.

HBO was the first to take advantage of this new technology when they broadcast the Muhammad

Ali vs Joe Frazier fight. The fight took place in Manila, but it was broadcast to the entire world.

It really was a Thrilla in Manila...

And not just because the title was literally Thrilla in Manila.

The fight was huge success, which meant HBO wanted to do more of that.

So naturally they sued FCC, which resulted in even more loosening of restrictions.

These 2 factors spurred the growth of cable.

In 1960s, cable only had around 850,000 US subscribers, but, at the end of the 1980s,

cable had 53,000,000 US subscribers.

To put that in perspective, that's a 62x increase, that's going from only the silver

play button to PewDiePie level.

The huge growth led to Congress passing the Cable Communications Act of 1984.

This is where our story begins.

Cable Communications Act of 19... you know, that way too long of a name.

Let's just call it the...

CCA.

The CCA did a lot of things, but, most importantly, it gave cities themselves the authority to

create exclusive partnerships between their city and cable companies.

Basically, cities would strike up deals with cable companies like this...

>> COMCAST: Heeeey there, beautiful San Francisco!

>> SAN FRANCISCO: Stop pandering.

>> COMCAST: Ok.

How about we make a little dealsy?

We're willing to wire your entire town.

That's right, every corner, every house gets cable.

It's huge selling point for your town, plus current residents will LOVE it.

>> SF: Ooh, I do like that.

But wait a sec, what's in it for you?

>> COMCAST: *mumbling* Eeeeh, you know, you'll give us a complete monopoly over the city

for, like the next 12-15 years.

Don't worry, this essential though, we need this time to properly build out the cable

lines, and make sure, you know, we're the ones doing it.

>> SF: Well obviously that plan seems great and not like it will blow up in our

face later.

We accept!

Good doing business with ya.

Cable companies would go around snatching up monopolies over cities, creating the birth

of the oligopoly we have today.

Unfortunately, when Congress realized the damage they did with the CCA, it was too late.

In 1992, Congress passed the Cable Television Consumer Protection and Competition Act, making

those sorta monopoly deals illegal, but, at that point, it was too late to fix the damage

or even change anything.

Why?

Let me tell ya about it!

The cable industry now had something called a natural monopoly.

What is that?

*OFF CAMERA* It's when you make a monopoly board out of only compostable parts.

Yea-- Wait, what?

No.

There are two types of costs that are relevant to our discussion: fixed costs and marginal

costs.

Fixed costs are costs that stays consistent, they don't change depending on how many

customers you have, and it's essential to have whatever you're spending your fixed

costs on, even if you only have 1 customer.

Among many other things, the biggest fixed cost in the cable industry is, well, the cables.

You gotta lay them down, no matter how many customers you get.

Then, on the other hand, we have marginal costs.

This is how much it costs hook up another person with your product.

This cost is not necessarily consistent, it can change depending on the scale of your

company.

For the cable industry, that cost is pretty small.

I mean, they have to send out a cable box and whatnot, but that's not crazy expensive.

A natural monopoly is when an industry has an extremely high fixed cost, but a much lower,

fairly consistent marginal cost.

Elaborating on what I previously said, it's crazy expensive to lay cables down and give

a city your internet and TV access, but it's pretty consistently cheap to send out cable

boxes and for the occasional technician to come to your home.

To really bring this explanation home, let's take a look at an example.

You live in the city totallylegitcityopolous, where, because of the laws previously mentioned,

you only 1 ISP: Time Warner Cable.

You want to change that, so you start a new cable company.

What do you have to do to actually sell internet?

Well, you first you have get a ton of permits.

It's tricky and long, but assuming you can do that, then comes the hard part: you have

to lay down cable.

You can't use the cable that's already there, those are Charter's Cables.

They laid 'em down, and they own 'em.

Unfortunately, as you might expect, laying down cable is very expensive.

You have a massive fixed cost.

I couldn't find one exact magical number on how much it does cost to lay down cable,

but I did find this chart from the US Department of Transportation, makes me think it's somewhere

between 21,000 and 52,000 dollars per mile, which is, oooh, lemme just say, you could

get a lot of comically large coffee cups for the money.

At this point, you have one of two options.

You could either realize you don't have enough money and call it quits, or somehow

get enough money together to lay down cables, and then, well, try to make a profit.

Most of the city already on Charter, which means you'd have to offer lower prices

then them just to get only around 10-20 percent of the population of the city on your plan,

according to Gizmodo.

Moreover, Charter would see that some customers are leaving, so they drop their

prices even lower than yours to get people to come back, and yes, that does provide a

temporary relief to consumers, you know, competition brings pricing that benefits buyers, but,

sooner or later, you're gonna run out of business because you have too few customers

paying too low a price. Charter's gonna going to go back to being a monopoly, prices

rise, and we're back to where we started.

In this scenario, your cable startup took a massive loss, and it's the reason why

no one or, at least, very few people, attempt to compete with existing cable companies.

No one wants to suffer to that outcome, and, thus, a natural monopoly is formed.

Heck, cable companies themselves aren't even willing to compete with each other.

John Oliver pointed this out in his segment on Net Neutrality a couple years ago when

he showed this clip of Comcast CEO Brian Roberts talking about the issue at the re/code code conference.

>> BRIAN ROBERTS: Both in video and in broadband, we don't compete with Time Warner.

You have to start with that very fundamental point.

They're in New York, we're in Philadelphia.

They're in LA, we're in San Francisco.

You can't buy a Comcast in New York, you can't buy a Time Warner in Philadelphia.

>> ALEX: Anyways, now that we've covered what a natural monopoly is, let's jump back to where we

left off: the Cable Television Consumer Protection and Competition Act of 1992.

So now, if you're the cable industry, and you're just hit with tighter regulation,

what do you do?

MERGE!

Merge like crazy.

Merge to your heart's content.

This Quartz article does a really good job of illustrating the mergers, but, long story

short, in 24 years, between 1993 and 2017, cable companies merged so much that what was

previously 40 cable companies merged into just THREE!

Charter, Comcast, and Cox.

So, where do we go from here?

Let's talk about Net Neutrality.

This is Ajit Pai.

He's the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, and recently, he voted to repeal

Net Neutrality.

>> AJIT PAI: The chair votes aye. The item is adopted with editorial privileges given as granted as requested.

For those unaware, Net Neutrality is the concept that ISPs must provide access to everything

on the internet regardless of where it comes from.

Essentially, ISPs can't play favourites when deciding what content to deliver to you.

In the same way the local water company can't say "Hey, using our water for toilets will

be an extra $9.99 a month," net neutrality blocks ISPs from saying "Hey, using our

internet for YouTube will be an extra $9.99 a month."

That's the brief explanation, click the i to see a longer Vi Hart video explaining

it more.

Ajit Pai believes that eliminating Net Neutrality, among other things, will encourage competition

and more choices for consumer.

But, we know that's not true, because we just saw how ISPs got and maintained these

monopolies.

Eliminating net neutrality isn't going to magically change that.

A matter of fact, the only reason net neutrality laws exist at all is because there is no competition.

If ISPs didn't have regional monopolies in the US, then competition and capitalism

would encourage ISPs to not throttle or block internet, because, if they did, you could

just switch to a competitor who didn't.

Luckily, just because the FCC rolled back net neutrality, it doesn't mean the fight

is over.

As the famous battleforthenet.com says, "Congress [can] stop this—by passing a "Resolution

of Disapproval" to overturn the FCC vote."

So if you're interested in telling Congress your thoughts, click the i to check out battleforthenet.com.

And maybe... one day... we can get Jack to legally change his name to LitFam.

*short pause* And save the free and open internet, that's important too.

I also wanna quickly note before I end that I recognize that this is kinda a United States-specific

problem, so, if you're international, let me know what cable companies and ISPs are

like in country in the comments down below.

I talked with some of my YouTube friends from other countries, and it's really interesting

to see how it all compares.

>> ETHAN: Mr. Pie in the Face has basically ascended to anime super villain at this point.

You're a partisan hack, dude!

UN Votes 128-9 To Condemn US Decision On Jerusalem, Trump's Response Is PURE GOLD - Duration: 3:48.

UN Votes 128-9 To Condemn US Decision On Jerusalem, Trump's Response Is PURE GOLD

On Thursday, all eyes were on the United Nations as it prepared to vote on a resolution condemning

President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by moving

the U.S. Embassy.

When all was said and done, the UN voted 128-9 against President Trump.

However, his response was pure gold.Ahead of Thursday's vote, U.S. Ambassador to the

U.N. Nikki Haley warned that the U.S. would be "watching" who went against the president.

Additionally, President Trump told the press on Wednesday, "We're watching those votes.

Let them vote against us.

We'll save a lot.

We don't care.

But this isn't like it used to be, where they could vote against you and then you pay

them hundreds of millions of dollars and nobody knows what they're doing."

On Tuesday, Haley had tweeted that "the U.S. will be taking names" of the countries

that vote to support the resolution and that Trump had asked her to report back on the

nations "who voted against us."

She also penned a letter to most of the 193 U.N. member states, in which she warned the

U.S. would retaliate against countries that vote in favor of the resolutions.

Trump, during a Cabinet meeting in Washington on Wednesday, said: "We're watching those

votes.

Let them vote against us."

"We'll save a lot," he said.

"We don't care."

[Source: NBC News] Haley, in a scathing statement before Thursday's

vote, said the U.S. would remember who stood with them and raised the issue of American

financial support for the U.N.

"The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in

the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation," she said.

"We will remember it when we are called upon to once again make the world's largest

contribution to the United Nations," Haley warned.

"And we will remember it when so many countries come calling on us, as they so often do, to

pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit," Haley added.

"America will put our embassy in Jerusalem.

No vote in the United Nations will make any difference on that."

Still, when the final vote came in on Thursday, it was not the news Trump wanted to hear.

The final result of the vote is in, and it was not in favor of Trump.

In fact, the U.N. voted overwhelmingly to condemn his Jerusalem decision.

How bad was it?

The resolution passed with 128 nations voting to disapprove Trump's stand with Israel,

while only nine supported the president.

In addition, 35 countries abstained.

[Source: IJR] While the vote was a major slap in the face

to the Trump administration, it holds no actual weight because the U.S. has veto power, and

in response, Trump has effectively said that he "does not care" which way the UN voted

because it will be vetoed. The vote serves as an important indicator, though, as to which

foreign governments stand with the United States and our sovereignty, and which foreign

bodies do not.

Needless to say, former President Barack Obama never would have stood up to the UN this way.

He was also too busy kowtowing to foreign leaders to back our closest ally, Israel.

President Trump, on the other hand, puts America and her allies first.

This is a welcome departure from what we endured during the eight years of the Obama administration,

to be sure.

BREAKING: Hillary Said She's Leaving U.S. To Be President – Won't Like It Where She's Going! - Duration: 5:10.

BREAKING: Hillary Said She's Leaving U.S.

To Be President – Won't Like It Where She's Going!

Hillary Clinton has wanted to be president for decades, and last year she really thought

she would win.

Hillary had the support of the crooked liberal mainstream media, money from George Soros,

celebrity endorsements, and of course, voter fraud galore.

Everything was lined up correctly for Hillary to be crowned but that all changed the moment

Donald Trump stepped onto the scene.

The tough-talking New Yorker dashed Clinton's chances for a presidential win and in the

process also destroyed the Democrat party in a single blow.

For a year, liberals have been pouting over Trump's win, and Hillary Clinton is still

licking her wounds and obsessively whining about losing the election.

And, it appears she is not giving up on her dream of being president even if that means

leaving the country, or planet to be elected.

In the real world when someone starts talking about living in an alternate universe where

they are president, it usually signals that they have had a break with reality, and they

would be taken quickly to a doctor.

Well, that would be a logical solution, though if you are Hillary Clinton and you fantasize

about being president on another planet, it is just laughed off.

In a recent interview with the liberal online publication, Now This, Hillary Clinton sat

down to be interviewed and languished over being president on another planet.

Yeah, you read that correctly.

Hillary Clinton actually sat down and daydreamed about being president on the fictional planet

Earth 2 where she would save the world from Kim Jong-un and how she would handle the supposed

Russian "collusion."

Here is more from The American Mirror:

Hillary Clinton really wants to be president — even if that means blasting off from Earth

to do so.

The failed Democratic candidate recently talked with Now This, a liberal online news outlet,

where she pined for a presidency.

While discussing a variety of topics, Clinton envisioned leaving Earth and venturing Earth

2, where that planet faces the same issues as the actual Earth. We went to another planet

with Hillary," the caption reads as Clinton and Now This's Nico Pitney fired off a series

of topics.

"People joke about Earth 2, where you are president," he told a giggling Hillary.

On Earth 2's North Korea, Clinton said she would have "full on diplomatic pressure"

to solve the crisis with the portly dictator Kim Jong-un.

Clinton said if she was in charge, she would be "putting as much money as it took into

enforcing the laws we already have," and added she would want "universal background

checks."

After answering a question about the opioid crisis, a handler attempted to cut off the

interview.

"I fear we have to end it here," a voice off camera said.

"Okay," Pitney responded.

"You want one more?

I'll be short — one more.

Because I like being on Earth 2," Hillary said.

Pitney then asked Clinton what she would do about Russia.

"If I had been president, or on Earth 2, where I am," Hillary said she would have

an "independent commission" look into the alleged Russian "hacking" of the presidential

election.

"I worry about '18.

I worry about 2020 because this is the first time we've even been attacked and not imposed

any real consequences on our adversary," Clinton asserted, ignoring moves by Congressional

Republicans and the Trump administration to impose new sanctions on Russia since the election.

The L.A. Times reported in late October:

The Russian government on Friday accused the United States of displaying "hostility"

as the Trump administration belatedly took the first steps toward imposing new sanctions

to punish Moscow for interfering in the 2016 presidential election.

In early August, after considerable delay and with minimal fanfare, President Trump

signed into law a measure that required the new sanctions, which target individuals and

firms with ties to Russian defense and intelligence agencies.

Under the law, companies that "knowingly engage in a significant transaction" with

people or firms on the list could be subject to U.S. sanctions after Jan. 28.

It appears that Hillary Clinton has lost her mind completely, but no one on the left will

say it in order to save face.

They all know that Hillary Clinton is damaged goods and by her doing these public interviews

and making these outlandish remarks only proves the point more.

Instead of Hillary Clinton retiring and fading off into the distance, she continues to push

her insane conspiracy theories and whine about losing the election.

If she had any sense of decency in her, she would just keep her mouth shut and leave the

American people alone, but that isn't how Hillary works.

Hopefully, one day soon she will officially retire or find another hobby that doesn't

involve politics or activism so we all be left alone in peace.

N. Korea to seek talks with U.S. once it has perfected ICBM re-entry technology: Seoul think tank - Duration: 2:13.

With a new year just around the corner, a local think tank summed up an outlook on international

affairs for 2018.

Included are speculations on North Korea's missile technology and what would happen if

they were to complete it.

Lee Jeong-yeon shares with us their analysis.

(Kor) A successful missile launch must have three

things: launch trajectory, position control, and re-entry.

North Korea's missiles currently have the first two, but not re-entry.

But why is re-entry technology so important?

(Kor) "Re-entry is what allows a nuclear warhead

to withstand extreme heat and pressure when passing through the Earth's atmosphere.

(Kor) "North Korea will most likely demand to be

recognized as a nuclear state and to keep a certain level of nuclear technology, in

exchange for limiting their ICBM capabilities, enough to attack neighboring countries."

US 'plotting to launch MILITARY ATTACK' on North Korea: 'Punch Pyongyang in the nose' - DAILY NEWS - Duration: 3:14.

US 'plotting to launch MILITARY ATTACK' on North Korea: 'Punch Pyongyang in the nose'

THE US is preparing to launch an unprecedented military attack on North Korea after deciding

diplomacy will not put a stop to Kim Jong-un's warmongering, according to reports.

Tensions between North Korea and the US have soared since President Trump took office in

January and with more missile launches expected in the new year, the White House has reportedly

"dramatically" stepped up plans for a military solution.

Among the options under consideration are the destruction of one of North Korea's

missile launch sites, while weapons stockpiles may also be targeted.

Any military action would be designed to warn the North Korean regime that the US is "serious"

about putting an end to the series of missile and nuclear tests which has prompted major

fears among neighbouring countries.

One former US security official briefed on policy told the Telegraph: "The Pentagon

is trying to find options that would allow them to punch the North Koreans in the nose,

get their attention and show that we're serious."

The US has been gradually building up its military presence over recent months and it

now appears Washington could call upon its assets in the region to launch a debilitating

attack on the regime.

It is thought that by attacking the missile test site or weapons stockpiles, the loss

of life would be minimised and it could force Kim to come to the negotiating table.

President Trump has repeatedly refused to take military action off the table and while

his administration has always called for diplomacy, the increasing sophistication of Pyongyang's

arsenal has sparked fresh con ferns about the regime's ability to strike anywhere

in the world.

One UK source who recently left a briefing with Trump's national security adviser,

H.R. McMaster, feeling alarmed.

The source told the Telegraph: "The Americans said deterrence doesn't work against North

Korea and negotiation doesn't work.

"Those who heard them left with the impression that military action is very much an option

they were considering seriously."

Meanwhile Kori Schake, a former director of defence strategy at the White House's National

Security Council, has admitted there is a growing chance the US administration will

resort to conflict.

She said: "The White House very strongly believes that either North Korea will agree to give

up its nuclear weapons or we will launch a preventative attack to destroy them.

"I would put the odds of them actually carrying that out at three in 10.

Other policy experts say it is four in ten."

N. Korea capable of threatening U.S. with nuclear arms: Kim Jong-un - Duration: 0:37.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un says it's undeniable North Korea has become a strategic

country capable of threatening the United States with nuclear arms.

According to the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency,... Kim made his remarks

on Thursday during a meeting of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea in Pyongyang.

Kim added that due to the rapid development of North Korea's nuclear arms program... the

country's nuclear weapons was having a great impact on the world's political stage and

environment.

He also vowed to make North Korea independent in politics, self-supporting in the economy

and self-reliant in defense.
