Fire and fury delivered as 14,000 US troops arrive in North Korea firing line

The pride of the US Navy the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan has arrived outside Okinawa with fearsome guided-missile destroyers USS Stethem, USS Chafee and USS Mustin.

A staggering 14,000 troops will take part in the exercises as the White House ordered flexing of US military might in the region. US Navy F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets from the Carrier Air Wing (CVW) are expected to be involved.

Marines and naval officers will take part in firing tests, fly overs and mock battles in a bid to ensure they are each ready for conflict with the North.

Highly trained maritime patrol and reconnaissance squadron will spend ten days in the area, in an action which is likely to provoke North Korea. The nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan is one of America's fearsome Nimitz-class super-carriers.

She is a key part of the US Pacific Fleet and flagship of Carrier Strike Group Five home-ported in Japan.

She is more than 1,000 feet long, caost $4.5Bn, and with more than 5,600 military personnel on board she is the size of a small American town.

Her wing of more than 90 aircraft and helicopters includes the incredibly capable multirole combat jet the F/A-18 Hornet. The Hornet has a top speed of 1,200 and carries an array of hyper-destructive air-to-ground missiles.

Hornets from the USS Ronald Reagan could be over Pyongyang in less than 30 minutes. .

America's ability to deploy a huge armada, packed with terrifying weaponry will send a strong signal to Pyongyang as Kim Jong-Un refuses to end the advancement of his nuclear programme. Recent military drills have enraged the North.

The United States and South Korea conducted large-scale military drills last week, which the North said made the outbreak of war "an established fact".

The ten day annual bilateral training exercise comes as North Koreas nuclear and ballistic missile tests show no sign of slowing down. The drills began on Thursday in Okinawa, an are missiles have been launched over.

Pentagon officials openly admitted the aim is to put the fear in North Korea, to show them what they are up against.

Joint Staff Director Lieutenant General Kenneth F. told Pentagon reporters: For forward deployed forces, exercises are a critical component to readiness.

They do, in fact, assure our partners.   They also exercise a powerful deterring effect. The exercise follows joint naval exercises in the Western Pacific involving U.S. and South Korean naval forces.

On Sunday, Japan's largest war ship took part in war games with the US Air Force's B-1B Lancer bombers.

The high tech jets flew from Andersen Air Force Base on the US Pacific island territory of Guam, joined by six F-35s four F-18s and a tanker aircraft from U.S.

The Japanese air force dispatched four F-15 jet fighters and a patrol aircraft, Japan's Air Self Defence Force (ASDF) said.

China and Russia have proposed that the United States and South Korea stop major military exercises in the area in exchange for North Korea halting its weapons programs.

US secretary of state Rex Tillerson refused to give in to demands, such as Russia being around the table, but urged the North to keep lines of communication open.

North Korea has continuously sparked fears of the outbreak of World War 3 as Kim Jong-un refuses to give up his ambitions to become the "world's strongest nuclear power".

The despot leader and Donald Trump become embroiled in a furious war of words as either side threatened the prospect of military strikes on one another.

Despite the threats, Mr Trump's Administration has announced they would like to seek a diplomatic solution to the apparent crisis, bringing North Korea to the negotiating table.

US Defence Secretary Rex Tillerson said he didn't expect North Korea to drop its weapons programme, but would happily even discuss the weather if it meant Washington and Pyongyang were sitting around the same table.

Okinawa was at the centre of the last major bloody battle of World War II. On April 1, 1945 more than 180,000 soldiers, sailors and marines descended on the Pacific island for the final push for Japan, under Operation Iceberg.

Okinawa is home to Hacksaw Ridge, where US troops were slaughtered in a battle after battle before they finally took it in May. There were a reported 49,000 casualties for the Americans alone, including 12,520 killed.

AARON MATÉ: It's The Real News.

I'm Aaron Maté.

The Trump administration continues its campaign against Iran.

On Thursday, the U.S. ambassador to the UN stood in front of what she said were parts

of Iranian-made missiles, including one she claimed that was recently fired by Houthi

rebels in Yemen into Saudi Arabia.

NIKKI HALEY: These are the recovered pieces of a missile fired by Houthi militants from

Yemen into Saudi Arabia.

The missile's intended target was a civilian airport in Riyadh, through which tens of thousands

of passengers travel each day.

I repeat: The missile was used to attack an international civilian airport in a G20 country.

Just imagine if this missile had been launched at Dulles Airport or JFK, or the airports

in Paris, London, or Berlin.

That's what we're talking about here.

That's what Iran is actively supporting.

AARON MATÉ: Haley also claimed that a UN panel has concluded that Iran has supplied

the Houthis with missiles.

But the UN has reached no such conclusions.

All of this prompted Iran's foreign minister to tweet out a photo comparing Haley's speech

to Colin Powell's infamous presentation to the UN, making the phony case for war on Iraq.

Trita Parsi is the president of the National Iranian American Council and author of "Losing

an Enemy: Obama, Iran, and the Triumph of Diplomacy."

Trita, welcome.

My only question here is whether the comparison to Colin Powell is unfair because Colin Powell

had a vial and some slides.

Nikki Haley came out with missile fragments, this elaborate display, claiming that Iran

was supplying these weapons to the Houthis.

What did you make of what she said yesterday?

TRITA PARSI: Well, if we continue on the comparison, I think Colin Powell was a little bit more

convincing, as he was selling a lie.

I think the media reaction to Nikki Haley has been quite clear.

People are very skeptical.

It's so absurd, because at least Colin Powell tried to make a believable lie.

In this case, she is claiming that the UN secretary general has come to a conclusion,

which he explicitly says he has not come to that conclusion.

Moreover, there was one area of that that was very reminiscent of the Bush era effort

to sell a lie.

That's where she says "Imagine if this missile had hit Dulles Airport."

Well, these missiles cannot reach Dulles Airport.

That's not a real reality, but she's trying to paint a completely unrealistic picture

of fear in the minds of the American people in order to convince them to go to war.

Particularly, when she says Dulles Airport, she's trying to say "Look, this is targeting

civilians."

Reality is, there are no civilian Saudis that have died in this horrible conflict.

There's hundreds of thousands and thousands of civilians Yemenis who have died as a result

of the bombing that Saudi Arabia is engaging in, which the United States is supporting

and enabling.

It was a degree of inaccuracy and deliberate deceit that I think only Nikki Haley, with

the exception of Donald Trump, has managed to achieve in the Trump administration.

AARON MATÉ: That point is so key, because you have Nikki Haley standing in front of

a missile, that whether or not it came from Iran, it killed nobody, caused no casualties.

Meanwhile, her government is supplying the missiles to Saudi Arabia that has killed tens

of thousands of people, but yet there is no mention of that.

Let's talk, though, about -- let's take the case at face value in terms of this accusation

that Iran's supplying these weapons to the Houthis.

It just strikes me as pretty implausible, since the country is under a Saudi-led, U.S.-enforced

air and sea blockade.

TRITA PARSI: The U.S. military says that the Iranians may have other ways of getting the

thing in there.

I think it's important to recognize that there's no evidence that has been presented at this

point.

The components inside of that missile -- apparently, some components were Iranian, but some components

were American as well, but the larger picture is this.

The Iranians, I think, are in some ways providing some military support, not just advisers,

to the Houthis, and I think that's problematic, because what we need in the region, and in

Yemen in particular, is to have all sides stop arming the fighting parties, but who

is doing most of that arming?

The United States is selling $60 billion of weapons to Saudi Arabia.

The British are selling weapons to Saudi Arabia as well.

They are the ones that are enforcing a siege, starving the people of Yemen, and carpet bombing

that country.

If one missile that didn't kill anyone potentially has an Iranian component in it, then what

does that say about all of the weapons and the munitions that currently are being used

by the Saudis, that are made and sold by the United States, and we have the receipts for

them?

AARON MATÉ: Let's go to more of what Nikki Haley said.

I want to play another clip from her where she talked about- The Iran nuclear deal has

emboldened the Iranian government, she said, to cause mischief throughout the region.

NIKKI HALEY: The nuclear deal has done nothing to moderate the regime's conduct in other

areas.

Aid from Iran's revolutionary guard to dangerous militias and terror groups is increasing.

Its ballistic missiles and advanced weapons are turning up in war zones across the region.

It's hard to find a conflict or a terrorist group in the Middle East that does not have

Iran's fingerprints all over it.

AARON MATÉ: That's Nikki Haley yesterday saying that Iran's fingerprints are all over

conflict zones and terror groups across the Middle East.

Trita, I thought the irony of this was so funny, because on the same day yesterday as

Nikki Haley said this, there was a report in USA Today, the latest to confirm that U.S.

weapons in Syria wound up in the hands of ISIS.

TRITA PARSI: Indeed, when it comes to who is doing the destabilizing, and where are

all the weapons coming from that are currently being used in the Middle East, the vast majority

is coming from the West and from the United States.

That does not mean that the Iranians necessarily are a constructive player, and I think again

I want to emphasize, it is critical to make sure no one is arming the fighting parties

in Yemen.

This war has gone on for two years now, more than two years, and as long as more weapons

are coming in, it's going to be able to sustain itself.

Now, of course, Yemen had a tremendous amount of weapons even before the civil war broke

out, so it's not necessarily just coming from the outside, but I think it's also important

to keep in mind that when she's saying the nuclear deal has not changed Iran's behavior

elsewhere, and to a certain extent that might be true, but it's also irrelevant, because

the nuclear deal has also not done anything to affect global warming, it has done nothing

to reduce poverty in Africa, and a whole set of other issues, which it did not address.

The nuclear deal was not addressing the other policies of Iran or the other policies of

the United States.

To what extent has the nuclear deal moderated America's foreign policy in the Middle East?

On the contrary, we're seeing that the United States is selling more weapons to the region

now than it was before, and it is giving a green light to a whole set of different things

that the Saudi regime is currently doing, that the Obama administration gave sometimes

a green light to, but often times actually refused to support.

We've seen the United States' policy in the region becoming more radical, more inconsistent,

but that's not a result of the nuclear deal.

This obsession of the Trump administration to try and blame everything on the nuclear

deal is really falling flat.

AARON MATÉ: Trita, you know, you pointed this out pretty tirelessly, that if the goal

is to change Iran's behavior, whatever that is, there is a history of what works, and

that history, you said, is diplomacy.

The Iran nuclear deal, that worked.

That changed a very critical policy of nuclear development.

Also, after 9/11, the U.S. and Iran worked together against the Taliban.

TRITA PARSI: Surely, when there has been diplomacy that has been pursued with positive intent,

that's the only time we've seen the West being able to change a core Iranian policy in a

significant way.

If the concern really was ballistic missiles, the Trump administration should clearly see

what has worked and what has not worked.

The fact that they're choosing something that hasn't worked, the fact that some of the surroundings

of what was happening yesterday.

The State Department did not have Nikki Haley's briefing on their schedule, which kind of

sent the signal that she's doing this on her own, and there's been plenty of speculation

that she's doing this partly because of her desire to continue to raise money from certain

individuals who have been supportive of her in the past, and those individuals, such as

Sheldon Adelson, are very much in favor and completely unapologetic about the fact that

they support and seek to see a war between the United States and Iran.

AARON MATÉ: We'll leave it there.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said a sustained cessation of North Korea's threatening

behavior was needed before dialogue can start.

"The United States will use all necessary measure to defend itself against North Korean

aggression.

But our hope remains that diplomacy will produce a resolution.

(...) A sustained cessation of North Korea's threatening behavior must occur before talks

can begin.

North Korea must earn its way back to the table."

Tillerson added until North Korea's denuclearization is achieved, pressure will continue,... although

channels of communications will be kept open.

South Korea said it will never recognize North Korea as nuclear state, adding that dialogue

aimed at denuclearization is the only possible way forward.

"We should not be coerced by North Korea's continuing provocations but rather uphold

our principles while formally responding to its reckless behaviors."

However, North Korea did not back down, and blamed the U.S. for the current situation.

"Our procession of nuclear weapons was an individual self-defensive measure of defend

our sovereignty and our right of resistance and development from the U.S. nuclear threat

and the blackmail.

And if anyone is to blame for it, it is the U.S. who is the one who must be held accountable."

The U.S. also called on China and Russia to put more pressure on Pyongyang,... and while

the two countries support the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula,... they stressed

a more cautious and peaceful approach to resolve the threat.

Meanwhile, the UN Secretary General emphasized the importance of reestablishing communication

channels between two Koreas.

"It is time to re-establish and strengthen communication channels including inter-Korean

and military to military channels."

The UN chief added that it's paramount to reduce the possibility of any misunderstandings

and miscalculations on the Korean peninsula.

Female service members sue U.S. military for alleged rape, sexual assault

Eight current and former U.S. service members filed a lawsuit Tuesday alleging they were raped, sexually assaulted or harassed while serving in the military and were retaliated against once they reported the abuse.

Among the defendants named in the suit are current and former Defense and Navy secretaries and Marine Corps commandants.

Although defendants testified before Congress and elsewhere that they have zero tolerance for rape and sexual assault, their conduct and the facts demonstrate the opposite: They have a high tolerance for sexual predators in their ranks, and zero tolerance for those who report rape, sexual assault and harassment, according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S.

District Court in Washington.

The suit outlines a pattern of abuse and portrays, in grim detail, the alleged experiences of the eight female service members -- two former Marine Corps officers, one active duty enlisted Marine, one former enlisted member of the Marine Corps and four former enlisted members of the Navy.

At first it was easy to laugh it off, plaintiff Elle Helmer, one of the former officers, said about her superiors advances.

When you finally said, you know, Im really not interested, Id rather we be friends -- thats when you became the target. They hated you for standing up for yourself, she told HLNs Jane Velez-Mitchell on Tuesday night.

  Eight military women say they were raped 02:04. The lawsuit alleges Helmer was raped by her superior at his office in March 2006 after a required pub crawl.

She told reporters at the National Press Club in Washington earlier in the day that she hoped by going public other victims would be encouraged to speak out.

In August 2010, Klay was gang-raped by a senior officer and his civilian friend at her Washington home, the suit contends. The officer allegedly threatened to kill Klay.

She reported the rapes and the officer was eventually convicted in a military court of adultery and indecent language, and given 45 days in military confinement, Klay said.

Their stance was there were two that said it (sex) was consensual, despite the death threat. Thats two against one. So by that logic, the more people youre gang-raped by the less your case is, she told Velez-Mitchell.

The Marine Corps responded to Klay and Helmers allegations in a written statement Tuesday that said their respective cases had been properly investigated and handled.

Federal law and judicial rulings require commanders in all services, including the Marine Corps, to balance needs of alleged victims with the constitutional rights of service members accused of crimes, it read.

According to the most recent Defense Department study, more than 19,000 incidents of unwanted sexual contact are estimated to have occurred in 2010, though less than 3,000 of those events were reported.

In 2010, less than 21% of reported cases went to trial. Of the 529 alleged perpetrators who were prosecuted, 53% were convicted, according to the 2011 Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, which is part of the Defense Department.

As leaders of this department we are committed to doing everything we can to ensure the safety, dignity and well being of our people. One sexual assault is one too many, Defense Department spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said in response to the lawsuit.

As a result of the pending litigation, she was unable to comment directly on the allegations.

Because sexual assault cases are some of the toughest cases to investigate and prosecute, the department has increased funding for investigators and judge advocates to receive specialized training, said Smith.

The lawsuit was filed less than two months after Defense Secretary Leon Panetta outlined new measures targeting sexual assaults against U.

In January, he promised increased funding to train military investigators and judge advocates about sexual assault cases, stressing the military has a zero tolerance policy for such crimes.

Russia could use "unconventional means of warfare" to cripple communications around the world by cutting undersea cables, amid increasing tensions around the world which have sparked World War 3 fears.  Tory MP Rishi Sunak, who published a Policy Exchange report on the risk Russia poses to underwater cables, said this was a "new phenomenon" of warfare.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "This has grown up over years and it wasn't that long ago, 20 years ago that we actually used satellites for all our digital communications so it's a relatively new phenomenon.

"I think it's also a relatively new phenomenon, as I mentioned in the Policy Exchange report, of Russia using unconventional means of warfare.. Russia's maritime aggression has put this on our map in a way that it wasn't quite before Rishi Sunak.

Russian ships are regularly spotted close to the Atlantic cables as Mr Putin's generals continue to explore new ways of waging unconventional war against the West.  Mr Sunak said that Russia has committed similar acts of warfare before.  He added: "We saw when they annexed Crimea one of the first things they did was to take control of the main internet exchange serving the peninsula and to indeed cut the internet cable.

"I think you know events like that, Russia's maritime aggression has put this on our map in a way that it wasn't quite there before.".

According to the report, published earlier this month, many cable systems are potentially at risk.  These cables are "essential" to modern life and the "digital economy", providing internet and communications links between separate countries and continents.

The submarine network comprises an estimated 213 independent cable systems and 545,018 miles (877,121 km) of fibre around the world, according to a recent report for the Policy Exchange think tank.

The report concluded: "They are inadequately protected and highly vulnerable to attack at sea and on land, from both hostile states and terrorists. Mr Sunak said the locations of the cables were both isolated and publicly available and a successful attack would be an existential threat to our security.
