Hey guys, my name is Soaches and today we're gonna be making a precursor orb from jak and daxter.
I've actually tried making this build in the past
that was when this channel was still pretty new and in the end I couldn't finish it
because the way I tried to make the shape of the orb made it too unsymmetrical to add the letters.
However, I feel like I've improved a lot since then
so this time I'm just gonna be using tape and old newspapers.
To make sure the orb gets the same shape as the original
I printed out a picture of the precursor orb online and cut it out in cardboard.
That way I can just pop it in whenever I want to see if it looks okay.
- And as usual I add some paper mache to give it a better shape.
[Cheerful music playing]
In retrospect I should have added more newspapers in the beginning
because the amount of paper mache I had to use made it a lot heavier than I thought it would be.
Then again, the precursor orbs are supposed to be made by some kind of metal,
So I'm technically just making it seem more authentic.
Next I started covering it with paper based air drying clay.
I use this clay for almost every build I make
just because it's easy to work with, it's non-toxic and it gives the object a nice and hard surface.
[Cheerful music playing]
Alright, so this is how applying a lot of clay
and if we put on the template we can see that it's pretty much a perfect fit.
There's a few holes in some areas, but I think I'm gonna be able to send that down.
So I'm gonna move on to just roughing this up with some sandpaper and I'll be right back afterwards.
It's pretty hard to make a straight line around the circular object
so I cut out a 1 centimeter thick stripe of paper and tried to mark it around the center of the orb.
If you want to make it higher up, the paper doesn't stay flat
so what I did was I used a tape measure to make the other lines one step at a time.
It wasn't the fastest option.
Actually [chuckles] This was like the slowest option I could have chosen,
but afterwards I could start outlining the rest of the details.
if you didn't know the signs on the orb are actually easter eggs from the developers.
So the top row is saying "Naughty Dog" which of course is the name of the company that made the game
and the bottom row spells out Madman.
So all I had to do was look up each letter in the precursor alphabet.
[That upbeat music is playing again]
[Here's what it sounds like:]
[buh da bip]
[bi dap bop]
[buh da bah]
[buh da bi]
[bih duh pah]
[di doo]
[duh be deeh]
[dee boo da bee!]
Now that everything is lined up I can start carving.
I've gotten some comments about what types of knives I use
and you can't actually buy these because these were handmade by my grandfather,
but I'd be surprised if there's no similar stuff out there.
If you don't have any special tools just using an x-acto knife also works. I've done it plenty of times before.
I also found that using a regular screwdriver worked pretty well to help flatten out the inside of the letters.
Alright so this is what it looks like after all the carving is done
and I think it did a pretty decent job.
especially since it took [laughs] way longer than I expected.
It actually took around 8-10 hours to carve all the letters out.
I also used some sandpaper on the inside - and I could see there were some scratches on the original as well
So I added some scratches in the places that I could see, and some just to make sure it's even.
- So the main orb is actually finished, and we can now move on to the painting!
After painting it had the right color, but it looked a bit too clean. Almost like plastic instead of metal,
so I brushed on black paint mixed with water and then I used paper to wipe it off, leaving an old tethered look.
Thank you so much for watching this video.
