US B-52 nuclear bombers 'on 24-hour ALERT' as North Korea vows to annihilate Trump

THE US Air Force has ordered its nuclear bombers to be on 24-hour alert status as tensions

with North Korea reach an all-time high.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un have put the globe on the edge of World War 3 after numerous

nuclear missile threats.

Trump warned the Hermit Kingdom's hierarchy that it faced destruction if it did not abandon

its nuclear weapons programme.

But the tubby tyrant has vowed to continue developing missiles, until one has the range

to hit New York.

In response, Trump has placed his B-52 bomber planes on 24-hour alert status, a move not

seen since the Cold War ended in 1991.

Air Force chief of staff General David Goldfein said: "This is yet one more step in ensuring

that we're prepared.

"I look at it more as not planning for any specific event, but more for the reality of

the global situation we find ourselves in and how we ensure we're prepared going forward."

"We've got other players out there who have nuclear capability.

It's never been more important to make sure that we get this mission right."

The B-52s were placed on alert for decades when the United States was faced with the

dangers of the Soviet Union.

The measure comes after two nuclear B1-B bombers were flown over South Korea, to send a message

to the despot nation.

U.S trade deficit with S. Korea doubles since KORUS FTA took effect: U.S. envoy - Duration: 1:34.

Washington's acting ambassador in Seoul expressed dissatisfaction with the two country's bilateral

trade pact.

Mark Knapper pointed out... that while the FTA is an important link between the allies,

America's trade deficit with Korea cannot be overlooked.

Connie Kim has the details.

The United States has repeated its discontent over its trade deficit with Korea spiraling

from the Free Trade Agreement between the two allies, known as KORUS FTA, and called

on a more fair deal.

Addressing the first ROK-U.S. Joint Public-Private Economic Forum on Monday,….Acting U.S. Ambassador

to Korea Marc Knapper said the serious trade deficit with Seoul has doubled since the five-year-old

bilateral trade pact took effect and that Washington is looking for ways to make the

agreement into a more fair and balanced one.

Knapper labeled the trade deal "a symbol of the two nations' economic link" but added

that Washington cannot overlook the fact that deficit from the agreement has doubled since

it went into effect in April 2012.

U.S. President Trump had claimed the KORUS FTA now in its fifth year was horrible and

left the U.S. destroyed... which led to meetings of a round of talks on Washington's demands

for an amendment.

It was on the second round of meetings and earlier this month that the two sides agreed

to begin a process to amend the free trade deal.

The U.S. has raised the idea of FTA revisions centering on the automobile industry,.. and

that discussions will likely continue when the top negotiators from both Seoul and Washington

meet next month during Trump's visit to Korea next month.

North Korea threat 'CRITICAL and IMMINENT': Japan demands US address escalating crisis - Duration: 4:26.

North Korea threat 'CRITICAL and IMMINENT': Japan demands US address escalating crisis

Itsunori Onodera gave the stark warning to his US and South Korean counterparts in talks earlier today.

Mr Onoderas remarks underscored the deep concern in Tokyo after North Korean weapons tests, including test firing missiles over Japan, as Pyongyang seeks to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the mainland US.

His comments broke from more measured language earlier on Monday by US Defence Secretary James Mattis and South Korean Defence Minister Song Young-Moo, as the three men met on the sidelines of a gathering of Asian defence chiefs in the Philippines.

He said: "The threat posed by has grown to the unprecedented, critical and imminent level.  "Therefore, we have to take calibrated and different responses to meet with that level of threat."  .

South Koreas Mr Song also acknowledged North Koreas provocative behaviour is becoming worse and worse, in public remarks before reporters were escorted out of the meeting room.

General Mattis renewed sharp criticism of North Koreas tests, saying they threaten regional and global security".

The US defence minister, who kicked off a week-long trip to the region on Monday, has been eager to emphasise diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully as escalating tension between Washington and Pyongyang stoked fears of "armed confrontation".

Asked about his conversation with Mr Onodera after the two met earlier in the day, before joining South Koreas Mr Song, the American said they discussed maintaining stability and peace in support of the diplomats".

Former US president Jimmy Carter has again said he is willing to travel to North Korea on behalf of the Trump administration to help diffuse the situation.

General Mattis has been more cautious in his public remarks than US President Donald Trump, who has been locked in a war of words with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, threatening to destroy the rogue state to defend the United States and its allies.

Kim has blasted Mr Trump as mentally deranged". The American defence minister is at the start of a week-long trip to Asia and will attend meetings hosted by defence ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the Philippines.

ASEAN defence ministers, in a joint statement, expressed grave concern over North Koreas nuclear and missile programmes and urged the reclusive country to meet its international obligations and resume communications.

They underscored the need to maintain peace and stability in the region and called for the exercise of self-restraint and the resumption of dialogue to de-escalate tensions in the Korean peninsula".

General Mattis trip, which will include a stop in Thailand, comes before Mr Trumps first visit to Asia next month, including a stop in China.

The President has been pressuring China, North Korea's neighbour and sole ally, to do more to rein in the hermit kingdom's missile and nuclear programmes.

CNN 10 | October 21, 2017 | U.S. leaders and music stars team up to help hurricane victims - Duration: 10:01.

Hey, I'm Carl Azuz, explaining world news for CNN 10.

Welcome to our first show of the week.

There's a lot going on right now in the Asian island country of Japan.

The nation held snap or early elections yesterday.

They were originally

scheduled for next year.

But Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for them to be held now because he was doing

well again in opinion polls.

His numbers had dropped

as the government grappled with a fair of corruption scandals linked to the prime minister,

though he's repeatedly denied being involved.

But they ticked back up again recently and analysts say Prime Minister Abe wanted to

take advantage of that and to get more support for his stance

against North Korea.

That nation has fired two ballistic missiles over Japan recently.

And it's not the only challenge Japan is facing.

Typhoon Lan was bearing down on the country last night.

It was expected to make landfall along

Japan's southern coast.

Its wind speeds were 134 miles per hour on Sunday, making the typhoon the equivalent

of a powerful category 4 hurricane.

And though Typhoon Lan was weakening as it approached Japan, it was so large that the

clouds around it extended farther than the borders of the

whole country.

Dangerous winds, flooding, mudslides and damage in the Japanese capital of Tokyo were all

possible.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

AZUZ (voice-over): Ten-second trivia:

Which living, former U.S. president is the oldest?

George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton?

George H.W. Bush was the born more than three months before Jimmy Carter, making him the

oldest living U.S. president, even though his term was later

than Carter.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

AZUZ: They were both born in 1924, which means that at a weekend concert to benefit people

in need, where all living U.S. presidents made an

appearance, there were two American leaders who are 93 years old.

Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter were joined in person by George W.

Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

And current President

Donald Trump appeared in a video message to concertgoers.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BARACK OBAMA, FORMER PRESIDENT: Heartbreaking as the tragedies that took place here in Texas

and in Florida, in Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin

Islands have been, what we've also seen is the spirit of America at its best.

DONALD TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: As a nation, we mourn for those who died,

and we pray for those who lost their homes or their

livelihoods.

In the aftermath of these terrible storms, the American people have done what we do best,

we came together, we helped one another,

and through it all, we remained resilient.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

AZUZ: You heard them say the tragedies and these storms -- the event was named Deep from

the Heart: The One American Appeal.

And its goal was to

raise money and assistance for the victims Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Stars like Lee Greenwood, Yolanda Adams and Lady Gaga were there.

And as of Saturday night, when the concert was held at Texas A&M University, the charity

effort had raised $31 million for more than 80,000

donors.

Where will the money go?

To organizations in Florida, Texas, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

What are the needs like?

Here's a look at the line of people that formed last week in Texas.

They were waiting for food assistance.

Hurricane

Harvey struck that state on August 25th.

Here are some of the thousands who waited in a similar line on Saturday, also seeking

food assistance,

also victims of a hurricane, that one named Irma, which made landfall in Florida on September

10th.

And on the U.S. commonwealth of Puerto Rico,

Hurricane Maria hit on September 20th, and knocked out electricity to the whole island.

More than four weeks later, 21 percent of Puerto Rico's power has been restored.

That means 3 million people there still don't have it, and about

a third of Puerto Ricans don't have safe drinking water yet.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

POLO SANDOVAL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): This school yard should be bustling with activity

at the height of fall semester.

Not today, not

since Hurricane Maria threatened and later devastated Puerto Rico.

The island's other 1,100 public schools and the doors to this high school have

been closed since September 18th.

Today, the only signs of life are on the other end of the campus.

Room 204 serves as Margarita Fuentes' temporary home.

(SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

SANDOVAL: This 52-year-old grandmother of 11 tells me, for one moment to another, she

lost her house and everything in it.

Her grandson Ezekiel led us up the mountainside to show us what's left of the family's

homes.

There isn't much else you can do these days.

Last

most of the students on this island, a return to class may provide a welcome escape from

reality.

(SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

SANDOVAL: He says the first thing he'll do when he gets back to class is hug his friends.

He doesn't know when that would be.

As long as displaced families like his are using schools as shelters, classes can't

resume.

The Department of Education announced Friday that some schools on the island would reopen

on Tuesday.

But the teachers at this school say that won't happen here.

(SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

SANDOVAL: "We have a lot of work to do," says Roxanna Miranda (ph), a drama teacher, anxious

to welcome her high schoolers back to class.

While there's optimist, there's no real timeline for when the students will walk down

the halls again.

Even if displaced families are resettled, there

are still plenty of obstacles.

(SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

SANDOVAL: Classrooms in disrepair, roads are nearly impassable because of the mudslides,

and there's no running water in town, leaving families to

struggle to survive.

(SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

SANDOVAL: Margarita says she is staying strong and wants to see her grandchildren back in

a classroom, just not this one.

AZUZ: Reporting on California's wildfires, we told you how they have been the deadliest

in the state's recorded history.

They now hold the record

for being the most destructive.

Two hundred forty-five thousand acres have burned.

That's a total space larger than the area of San Diego,

California, Memphis, Tennessee, or New York City.

Eighty-four hundred buildings have been destroyed, 42 lives have been lost, according to Cal

Fire, 10,000 firefighters are still involved in the fight.

They've made progress containing many of the blazes, that doesn't mean they're

out.

It means they've been surrounded by fire breaks.

The threat

to the state remains.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ALLISON CHINCHAR, CNN METEOROLOGIST: More than a dozen wildfires continue to burn across

areas of California, the majority of them in the northern

half of the state.

The key thing to note is that it's been burning in the northern half of the state

for quite some time.

In fact, when you take a

look at the top 20 most destructive wildfires in California's history, four them have

been in just this past month, and several of them are still

burning across areas of Northern California.

But the focus moving forward actually shifts from Northern California to southern California,

where we start to expect those Santa Ana winds to

begin to increase that fire threat.

So, you'll notice across areas of Southern California, we have both elevated and critical

fire threats for at

least the next several days.

This high pressures that has over areas of the southeast is what's going to help push

that very hot, dry air over the

Santa Ana Mountains and into some of those valley locations, including the city of Los

Angeles.

Because of that, you're going to be experiencing those strong winds but also incredibly hot

temperatures.

We have excessive heat warnings out for

much of this area, an excessive heat watches just a little bit further to the north of

Los Angeles not just for one day, but for multiple days.

Take a look at some of these temperatures: Los Angeles, for example, 78 degrees is the

average high temperature, will be in the 90s today and

triple digit for both Monday and Tuesday.

Both of which, by the way, could potentially end up being record highs for that city.

And they're not alone but Los Angeles becomes the bigger story because of the big event

that is taking place on Tuesday -- the start of the World

Series.

Here's the thing, the forecast for Tuesday shows a high of 100 degrees.

If we end up getting that warm, this could end up being the

hottest game in World Series history.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

AZUZ: Despite winning a public poll last year, the name Boaty McBoatface was not applied

to a British research ship.

Officials used that for one of

its submersibles instead.

But a Swedish transportation company honored its public's wishes when they voted to name

this Trainy McTrainface.

Officials even put a sweet face on

it to match its sweet new name.

They say Trainy McTrainface got 49 percent of the public vote, the biggest slice of the

piece.

It's a good thing that vote didn't go off the rails y'all.

Many fans of Boaty McBoatface were sunk.

So, when some took rolling stock of the

Swedish vote, got on track on locomotivated to train their efforts on cargoing the distance,

the result was a choo-choo-in to station Trainy

McTrainface in the railyard.

READY FOR WORLD WAR 3: US works overnight to install THAAD away from North Korea's watch - Duration: 5:26.

READY FOR WORLD WAR 3: US works overnight to install THAAD away from North Korea's watch

The anti-missile system, Terminal High Altitude Area Defence System, known as THAAD, has been put in place despite opposition from activists and China.

THAAD is designed to shoot enemy missiles out of the sky without detonating any warheads attached to them.  The Delta Battery, 2nd Air Defence Artillery Regiment from Fort Bliss in Texas was deployed to South Korea in April to begin moving the system into place.

The overnight operation occurred nearly a year after Washington and Seoul agreed to position the battery in a remote southeastern area to counter the growing threat from North Korea.

The Delta Battery was officially realigned with the 35th Air Defence Artillery (ADA) Brigade from the 11th ADA Brigade on Thursday in a reflagging ceremony in THAAD's new home in Seongju.

A statement from the 35th ADA public affairs office said: "The transfer of authority allowed D-2 to redeploy stateside to prepare for the unit's return to South Korea on permanent change of station orders." An army statement said: "The 35th ADA Brigade now employs the full complement of the U.S.

Army's ADA capabilities in the Republic of Korea, consisting of Avenger, Patriot and THAAD." Earlier this month US Forces Korea (USFK) announced the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system is a "tentative" attempt to foil any spontaneous plots from despot leader Kim Jong-un.

The USFK said: THAAD intercepts short and medium range ballistic missiles inside and outside the atmosphere.

It is interoperable with other ballistic missile defence systems, highly mobile, and deployable worldwide. The system, that was announced last month, can identify incoming missiles "at ranges up to 1,000 km [621miles]".

The range of the THAAD system allows North Korea and some parts of China to be scoured for potential threats. Beijing has voiced intense opposition to the radar technology due to a spying risk.

However, military experts have attempted to extinguish China's complaints by stating that the optimal range of the system is 372miles (600km) to 497 miles (800km).

The installation of the THAAD system comes as the region seems to be poised to descend into could be.

After several missile tests by North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un and an increasingly hostile war of words with US President Donald Trump the situation has deteriorated rapidly.

As well, has entered into a war of words with most of its neighbours, most notably Japan. The rogue state, which has fired two rockets over Japanese territory this year, sent the warning you will pay for your crimes.

Pyongyang-based newspaper issued the threat to Tokyo which was a reference to past government-general rule over Korea enforced by Japan. North Korea officials also vowed to make nuclear clouds over Japan.

Korean Central News Agency said the behaviour of Japan in calling for international maximum pressure on the rogue state was little short of mad.

The statement read: Inciting tensions on the Korean peninsula is a suicidal deed that will bring clouds to the Japanese archipelago. Former US President Jimmy Carter said he would be willing to travel to North Korea on behalf of the Trump administration to help diffuse rising tensions, The New York Times reported on its website on Sunday.  Mr Carter, 93, said: "I would go, yes,  when he was asked in an interview at his ranch house in Plains, Georgia whether it was time for another diplomatic mission and whether he would do so for President Trump.

WW3: North Korea threatens 'puppet state South' with 'destruction' for alliance with US

The Pyongyang Times headlined a propaganda piece with "Subservience to US leads to abyss of destruction" which accused of being a "lunatic".

It also lashed out at South Korea for being a so-called "puppet force", adding that "lunatic Trump" is running "headlong into ruin taking America with him and the poor puppet forces are following him".

It said: "Such rubbish as fire and fury, total destruction, annihilation and calm before storm are heard from Trump every day and the US is keen on recklessly playing with fire by introducing nuclear bomber formation, nuclear carrier strike groups, nuclear submarines and Aegis into the sky and waters off the Korean Peninsula in succession.

"Dignitaries of White House, and State and Defence Departments of the US are having a hard time cooling Trump, who is overheated with a war fever. But only the south Korean puppet forces are fanning up the lunatic fingering a nuclear button.

"History records weak nations which faced annihilation after acceding to alliance and coalition out of quick-witted calculation and also subject countries which saved their destiny by getting themselves away from the evil influence of big powers after becoming sensitive enough to understand the change of the times.

"But it seems to us that the puppet forces can hardly get themselves free from the slavish way of thinking as they have been brainwashed by the US so much that they are lost to independent strategic and political thinking faculty.

"Lunatic is running headlong into ruin, taking America with him, and the poor puppet forces are following him, at the peril of their lives." has also labelled Japan a "stooge" and threatened the country with "bitter doom", in its state-controlled paper Rodong Sinmun.

The propaganda rag said: "During recent talks with the foreign minister of Denmark, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono let loose a string of rubbish that 'it is important for the whole international community to step up pressure upon the DPRK so as to get it change its policy.'.

"Earlier, he clung to the sleeves of diplomatic officials of the UK, Germany, China, Ukraine and other countries to stoke an atmosphere of pressure against the DPRK, clamouring about the necessity to put renewed pressure upon it.

"It is ridiculous for Japan, no more than a stooge, to trumpet about maximum pressure. "Now the economic policy of the Japanese authorities has faced doom..

The inflammatory rhetoric comes as foreign secretary Boris Johnson is giving his backing to to In a hard-hitting speech, the Foreign Secretary will insist that the US President has an absolute duty to protect his country and its allies against aggression by the regime of.

He will also urge the US not to rule out a military strike against the dictators forces. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been high for months after a series of nuclear missile tests by the rogue nation.

'Trump will not wait to STRIKE' US to launch World War 3 WITHOUT North Korea missile test

Tensions on the Korean penisula have been growing to unprecedented levels in recent weeks amid hostile rhetoric and.

has pledged to blitz the US territory of Guam, while the communist states military is quickly developing a nuclear weapon capable of striking the US mainland.

Despite these threats, North Korean specialist and US military expert Bruce Klingner claims Donald Trump could launch an all-out war without even being threatened.

Speaking to Fox News, Mr Klingner said: US policy states that we would retaliate if we were attacked or pre-eminently if we had knowledge they were going to attack us. But, under Trump, there is a new option, a preventive attack.

Even if we do not believe a strike is imminent or threat is real, we would attack them to prevent them from developing more missiles. In an interview broadcast yesterday, President Trump left it up in the air whether war with North Korea was on the cards.

He said: We will see what happens. We are prepared for everything. You would be shocked to see how prepared we are, if we need to be. Will this happen? Who knows?.

President Trump is preparing for a two-week trip to Asia in November, where sources expect the leader to visit the demilitarized zone, marking the border between.

On the visit, Mr Klingner said: Past presidents have done that, but not with this level of tension. The tensions are very high.

Trump and Kim Jong-Un have made this personal as well. Some have advised him to go to Camp Humphries, a nearby US military base.

But if he does not show up he may appear weak. But more than whether he goes or not, it is what he says.

If he makes it personal, if he makes comments about Kim Jong-Un, the tensions will rise to all-new levels.

We have to remember, North Korea is on the cusp on having nuclear weapons capable of hitting our mainland.           The nuclear-powered warship USS 'Ronald Reagan' has arrived in the South Korean port of Busan after joint drills, the US Navy said.

Earlier Pyongyang described it as "a demonstration of the real strike" upon the North.

The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group which also included Destroyer Squadron (DESRON), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) and the guided-missile destroyers USS 'Stethem' and USS 'Chafee' docked in the port of Busan on Saturday, the US Pacific Fleet said in a statement.    The group took part in Maritime Counter Special Operations Force Exercise (MCSOFEX) that kicked off October 15 and ended this Friday.

The massive exercises involved fighter jets, helicopters and naval ships and submarines from both countries.

"The focus of the bilateral training exercise was to increase the readiness of US and Republic of Korea [ROK] forces and maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula," the US Pacific Fleet added.

The city's residents, however, were not all positive about the warship's arrival.

A large sign saying "US troops go home" greeted the strike group on its arrival in Busan, according to the US military's newspaper, Stars and Stripes.    "I'm scared about this; I don't like war," Jeong Jun-ho, 15, told the paper after seeing the ship dock.

North Korea CRISIS: US preparing to put NUCLEAR BOMBERS on 24-hour ALERT - Duration: 3:40.

North Korea CRISIS: US preparing to put NUCLEAR BOMBERS on 24-hour ALERT

Air Force chief of staff General David Goldfein confirmed the plan amid concern 's nuclear warpath could ignite. It comes after Donald Trump met with his top military chiefs, claiming their talks were "the calm before the storm".

Speaking with Defense One, General Goldfein said: "This is yet one more step in ensuring that we're prepared.

"I look at it more as not planning for any specific event, but more for the reality of the global situation we find ourselves in and how we ensure we're prepared going forward.".

Kim Jong-un has continued to step up his warmongering rhetoric following his threat to wipe the US off the face of the earth in April.

General Goldfein added: "The world is a dangerous place and we've got folks that are talking openly about the use of nuclear weapons. "It's no longer a bipolar world where it's just us and the Soviet Union.

"We've got other players out there who have nuclear capability.

"It's never been more important to make sure that we get this mission right." Meanwhile the senior military man has told his commanders to begin planning for the event of all-out nuclear war.

He said: "I've challenged Air Force Global Strike Command to help lead the dialogue, help with this discussion about 'What does conventional conflict look like with a nuclear element?' and 'Do we respond as a global force if that were to occur?' and 'What are the options?'.

"How do we think about it — how do we think about deterrence in that environment?".

On Sunday Donald Trump confirmed the US is totally prepared to respond to North Korea ahead of Boris Johnson's call for the US President to not rule out a strike on the Korean Peninsula.

The Republican firebrand has long claimed he will do whatever is necessary to stop the rising technological advances of Kim Jong-un's military – promising to rain "fire and fury" down on North Korea if the young despot steps out of line.

Now with the UK's Foreign Secretary set to praise his military preparedness, Trump has warned North Korea it is "shocking" how "totally prepared" the US is for conflict with Kim.

He said: Well see what happens. We are so prepared, like you wouldnt believe. "You would be shocked to see how totally prepared we are if we need to be.

Would it be nice not to do that? The answer is yes. "Will that happen? Who knows, who knows.".

TL;DR: Just what the heck is the U.S. military up to in Africa? - Duration: 3:14.

The deadliest combat mission in President Trump's tenure is shrouded in mystery.

We deserve answers, not just about the four American soldiers who died in Niger, but about

the wider U.S. involvement in Africa.

Confused?

Let me help.

When U.S. special forces set out for the Niger-Mali border in early October, officials said they

were on a routine training mission.

It was supposed to be low risk.

Turns out, it wasn't.

Four American Green Berets, and five Nigerien soldiers died in an ambush.

Officials are blaming a militant group "new to the area."

Trump is usually quick to condemn Islamist terrorism, but he didn't mention this attack

for two weeks.

And the only reason it's making headlines now is because Trump lashed out at critics

who said he politicized his condolence calls.

The silver lining in this tragedy is that the Pentagon is finally being asked to explain

what happened.

And the FBI says it will look into the deaths.

But let's focus on the bigger issue: Africa hosts the second-largest deployment of U.S.

Special Operations forces, after the Middle East.

And even Congress isn't sure what exactly they're doing there.

At least 1,700 American troops are in nearly 30 African countries.

We think at least 800 of them are assigned to posts in Niger.

Another 300 are in Cameroon.

Military officials won't specify how many are elite forces.

But we know that in 2010, only three percent of special commandos were deployed to Africa.

By 2016, that jumped to 17 percent.

Among the buildup were the four Green Berets who died in Niger.

Senator John McCain is threatening to subpoena the Trump administration if it doesn't reveal

more about the attack.

Lawmakers are demanding to know more about military operations in general.

A little history here: U.S. forces arrived in Niger in 2013.

President Barack Obama sent them to support the French military, which was ousting extremists

taking over Mali, just right next door.

After that, the militants regrouped in the desert, and the U.S. military turned Niger

into an operational hub for the region.

America has two drone bases there.

They run surveillance across the Sahel region, from Mali to southern Libya, spying on ISIS

and groups linked to al-Qaeda.

U.S. drones are also flying out of Cameroon, and they're watching Boko Haram from the sky.

On the ground, U.S. forces in eastern Africa are fighting al-Shabab in Somalia.

In less than a decade, the U.S. militarization of Africa has put troops on every corner of

the continent.

American taxpayers are spending billions.

Yet as the U.S. military expands its presence, U.S. diplomacy is lagging behind.

The State Department is overseeing a disjointed policy.

Case in point: Chad was one of our closest and most capable allies in the fight against

terrorism.

Yet Trump just slapped it with a travel ban.

As a result, the country is scaling back its partnership.

Trump inherited America's militarization of Africa.

And he has an opportunity to rethink what works and what doesn't.

For now, we need answers about the four U.S. soldiers who died in Niger.

But in the long run, we need transparency and accountability in U.S. military operations

across the continent.

The security of Africans and Americans depends on it.
