Jo Song-gil seeks asylum in U.S.: La Repubblica - Duration: 0:56.

We start with the latest update on the senior North Korean diplomat in Italy who is believed

to be seeking asylum.

Italian daily La Repubblica, citing foreign affairs sources, reported Friday that Jo Song-gil,

the former charge d'affaires of the North's embassy in Rome, is seeking asylum in the

U.S., and that he and his family are currently under the protection of Italian authorities

as they wait.

The paper added that Jo had sought assistance from the Italian government in mid-November,

and that Italian authorities have been communicating with the U.S. discreetly.

As Jo's assignment came to an end in late November, he allegedly went into hiding with

his wife earlier that month,... with his current whereabouts still unknown.

This comes at a crucial time and could have a negative impact on Pyeongyang and Washington's

hopes of holding the second summit between their leaders early this year.

UN and US slam Saudis over Jamal Khashoggi trial - Duration: 3:58.

The United Nations human rights office has said it could not assess the fairness of a trial, adding that it was "not sufficient" and called for an independent investigation "with international involvement"

The US also piled on the pressure, with a senior US official saying Saudi Arabia's investigation and handling of the murder still lacks full credibility and accountability

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will continue to press the Saudis on Khashoggi's murder when he visits Riyadh next week as part of an eight-country tour of the Middle East, the official said

"He will raise the case of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and continue to push for accountability and credibility from the Saudi leadership as they move through the legal process that began earlier this week," the official told journalists on condition of anonymity

"I don't think, from our point of view, that the narrative emerging from the Saudis throughout the legal process has yet hit that threshold of credibility and accountability," the official said

In a case that shocked the world and created a sharp rift with Washington, Khashoggi was murdered and his corpse dismembered inside the kingdom's Istanbul consulate on October 2

After evidence emerged that the killing was done by a team of Saudis sent from Riyadh and closely linked to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Washington demanded a transparent investigation

On November 15, Riyadh prosecutors announced indictments against 11 people, and on Tuesday prosecutors said they were seeking the death penalty against five of them

But at the same time Prince Mohammed, whose right-hand aides were allegedly involved in the murder, was exonerated despite US intelligence reportedly having evidence that he was behind it

Despite the indictments so far, it was not clear if anyone in Prince Mohammed's close orbit would be charged

The case has made it difficult for the Trump administration to return the crucial bilateral relationship back to normal

A bipartisan resolution approved by the US Senate last month also held the crown prince responsible for the killing

"The Saudis should have a credible narrative for what happened in the consulate and subsequent events," the US official said Friday

"It's in their interest to pursue this as aggressively as they can to get this albatross off their backs and to get out from under the shadow of this incident, which has caused such an outcry

"

US election Democrats 2020 strategy akin to Trumpism without Trump - Duration: 3:29.

US election Democrats 2020 strategy akin to Trumpism without Trump

The Democratic Party should take some time to reflect on exactly what it is they stand for if they are to make sure is just a one term president, a professor of international politics told CNBC on Wednesday.

While 2019 has just started, the 2020 presidential season is about to kick into full swing.

More than 30 Democrats are thinking about announcing presidential bids, but very few stand out as obvious front runners and there are plenty of questions facing the party as It prepares to challenge Trump once again.

"The Democratic party does not have a fundamentally different economic political agenda overall — it is Trumpism without Trump I would say," Inderjeet Parmar, the head of international politics at the U.K.s City University, told CNBCs "Squawk Box Europe" on Wednesday.

"They believe that they pretty much won 2016 by 3 million votes and that a handful of votes in four states was all that was between them and the White House, so they havent changed their strategy very much."

"Alongside Trumps movement further and further to the right, they have effectively followed him along that path," Parmar said.

Senator became the first major candidate to enter the presidential race, in a video emailed to supporters on Monday.

The former Harvard professor promoted a message of economic fairness, while targeting corruption and racial inequity.

Warren is among the first Democrats to take a formal step for the partys nomination to take on Trump in 2020. The field is expected to grow in the coming weeks as other Democrats enter what will likely become a crowded and expensive primary contest.

In addition to the uncertainty surrounding who is running for office, the party currently finds itself in a state of transition. It comes at a time when the party is viewed as largely leaderless, with center left policies being pushed aside by a more ideologically liberal agenda.

Meanwhile, , the former Republican presidential candidate and incoming U.S. senator from Utah, published a of Trump on Tuesday evening.

"Trump becomes the central focal point — and that is for the GOP as well and people like Mitt Romney and others. They are basically saying that Trump is the problem," City Universitys Parmar said.

"My view is that Trump actually is a symptom of a much deeper problem. If you only seek to replace him but you carry on talking in the same kind of way with the same sort of broad set of policies, you are effectively going to continue that underlying legitimacy crisis which brought someone like Trump into office in the first place."

"And I think that is just storing up a large number of problems for the future," Parmar said.

In a , Romney said the U.S. leader had caused dismay around the world, attacking several of Trumps actions in recent weeks.

"The appointment of senior persons of lesser experience, the abandonment of allies who fight beside us, and the presidents thoughtless claim that America has long been a sucker in world affairs all defined his presidency down," he wrote.

He added that "Trumps words and actions have caused dismay around the world."

Trump is yet to issue a response to Romeys op ed.

The timing of the essay has prompted external observers to speculate whether the two time presidential hopeful might try to challenge Trump in the 2020 Republican primary election.
