Re: Zero, Overlord, and Sword Art Online walk into a bar.

I immediately prepare them the same drink I make for all the other isekai without asking for their individual requests.

The three anime leave happy because they are isekai after all.

Maybe I should start adding more variety into their drinks.

Chapter 1: What is Isekai?

The translation of Isekai in English is "different world".

It is mainly used as a sub-genre in games, manga, light novels, and most importantly, anime.

Isekai is when characters (either a group or individual) get transported to another universe.

The universe can be a fictional universe that is known in the character's universe (Yggdrasil) or can be completely new to them (Konosuba).

It can also be a Virtual World, filled with other players, or a world where the character is the only self-aware character in that universe.

In an Isekai the main character can at times have an advantage over others already in the that world.

Before going to another world however, most characters are gamers, NEETS, or shut-ins.

This gives them an advantage when journeying into the new world.

In Overlord, Momonga has a greater advantage to the other NPCs mainly because he is considered the Supreme One and leads Nazarick as an overpowered character with access to many powerful items.

Sometimes, the characters have a weak advantage.

Take for instance, Re: Zero.

Subaru only has one advantage in the world, which similar to a video game, when he is killed or dies, he gets sent back to some time before his death.

Unlike a video game with save points, he doesn't get to choose those save points.

This leads to many repeated moments that lose their authenticity in his eyes, or moments that are just lost for good and might as well have never happened.

Chapter 2: Examples

Now let's shed some light on a previously mentioned anime.

In Overlord, Momonga plays a JRPG called Yggdrasil with some longtime online friends.

They create a guild, but over time, as happens in real life they slowly stopped investing as much time into playing.

On the night that the games servers are to close for good, Momonga decides to play the

game by himself and enjoy his last moments reminiscing until the game shuts down once

and for all.

When midnight hits, nothing happens.

He then realizes that he is trapped in that world and has to lead Nazarick with the help

of the NPCs.

This Isekai takes place in a fictional universe; one that is known in Momonga's world, but

it is also a Virtual World that is the only thing the ingame characters know.

Re: Zero is another example of Isekai.

Subaru is a shut-in and a gamer in the universe.

One day, while he is getting groceries, he randomly gets transported into another world

that is different to his.

After meeting Emilia, they get killed, and after a couple deaths he's then faced with his

new reality that he will be brought back to life when he is killed or dies.

This type of Isekai is a fictional universe, however, and this universe was not known about by Subaru.

Going more toward the manga/light novel side of things, we have the obvious ones like Overlord

and Re: Zero.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is also a light novel that, as the name suggests,

is about the main character who is turned into a slime.

He is killed by a robber and is reincarnated as a slime in a different world with unique

abilities.

With a team by his side, he tries to get used to being a slime in this new world.

Isekai Onsen ni Tensei shita Ore no Kounou ga Tondemosugiru (I was Reincarnated as a

Hot Spring in an Alternate World, and I'm way too Effective) is manga where Atami Kusatsu

gets into an accident on his way to a hot spring.

He is then reincarnated as a hot spring itself and there are women that go to him.

Basically an ecchi manga.

Sword Art Online is a very popular example of Isekai.

Sword Art Online's universe is a virtual world inhabited by many, this means that Kirito

isn't the only one with his previous memories, and isn't the only one that is transferred

to the new world however he dedicates a lot of time and effort into the game and is a

result better than most other players.

Another Isekai anime is No Game No Life.

This anime's universe can be considered a virtual world, where players are playing

alongside the main character.

Some honorable mentions for Isekai anime/manga are Konosuba, Log Horizon, Outbreak Company,

the .hack//Sign, Drifters, and The Familiar of Zero.

Two popular movies that used Isekai is the second highest grossing anime film Spirited

Away and The Boy and the Beast.

Chapter 3: History The first anime that was seen to use the Isekai

genre is El-Hazard.

El-Hazard first aired on May 26, 1995 and last aired on January 25, 1996.

The anime focuses on four characters (three in high school).

They all are transported to El-Hazard, where there could be a possible war between the

human nations and the Bugrom tribe.

In this anime, the characters have the same appearance before and after going into the Isekai.

The first manga that is seen to use the Isekai genre is Fushigi Yūgi.

Fushigi Yūgi is a manga that started in May 1992 and ended in July 1996.

The manga was later made into a 52-minute anime series that started airing on April

6, 1995, and stopped airing on March 28, 1996, close to El-Hazard.

The manga is about two middle-schoolers who one day at the library read a strange book

that transports them to another universe.

In both of these series, they introduce the plot of going into a new world with the same

appearance.

After these two series, a few other series followed in its footsteps.

The Saga of Tanya the Evil (October 31, 2013 - present) and Knight's & Magic (October 16,

2010 - present) reel in a new (as well as popular) plot in the Isekai genre, which involves

the characters dying and being reincarnated in another universe.

.hack (2003) was one of the first series to introduce the new universe as a virtual world

where players play alongside one another.

After these, came widely more popular and successful anime like Sword Art Online.

In this past decade, Isekai has blown up in popularity, for the better or worse.

Chapter 4: What Makes an Isekai Anime an Isekai Anime?

Because of the definition of Isekai, all animes should have the main character(s) go into

a different world, either a fictional universe or a virtual world.

Most of the newer series have the character(s) be a gamer or a NEET, which gives them an

advantage in terms of knowledge.

The series also has the character wanting to get out of the fictional world and the

only way to do that is to defeat the antagonists.

Chapter 5: Conclusion Isekai is one of the most popular sub-genres

of anime ever.

It was so popular that it was banned in two anime story-type contests.

If you like the sub-genre, then you will have a large amount of anime to watch.

If you don't like it, however, then it might be very annoying to see it everywhere.

Nonetheless, isekai is one of my favorites even though I believe they are a little too

similiar to one another at times..

What are your thoughts on the topic?

Let me know in the comments.

Thanks for watching and have a great isekai week.

What is Shadows Awakening | A NEW aRPG - Duration: 9:16.

Today we're going to take a look at an upcoming isometric action RPG game for the PC, PS4

and Xbox One...

Shadows: Awakening.

Set to release at the end of this month actually.

Shadows: Awakening is a bit weird in that it's kind of a sequel and remake - of an unfinished

set of games, Shadows - Heretic Kingdoms.. which had ran into some problems and never

were finished off..

Since then, they've ditched the way they were going to piecemeal out the game in different

installments or books.. and instead Shadows: Awakening tells it's entire story.. in a single

game.

That they've said runs about 20-60 hours depending on how much side stuff you do.

One of the reasons I'm even bringing this game up on the channel.. is when you say isometric

action RPG - people's minds tend to go straight to Diablo or Path of Exile.

Fast, furious hack and slash titles.. long tail gameplay.. as a service model.. and lost

in the shuffle are the isometric action RPG titles that are more single player, story

driven games.. with endings.

I mean, I can't even really say enough good things about Grim Dawn or the recent Titan

Quest remaster even those Van Helsing games or Secrets of Grindea.. and yes, I'm aware

action RPG games are a much broader genre.. but I hope you know what I mean.. there is

a specific branch of this genre that gets overshadowed.

And when the focus isn't quite on how can I keep my players playing for infinite hours

- they can play a bit with certain mechanics or themes and they can allow focus to drift

or even.. not have 100% of the focus on having the second to second gameplay be addicting.

That's a nice way of saying that Shadows: Awakening is a great deal slower than most

action RPGs I've played.. but it also has quite a few very interesting design choices.

On screen you see my character with only 3 abilities.

Now it might make you feel a bit better to know that I can choose which 3 abilities I

have equipped from a list of abilities and can power and level them up specifically..

but 3 isn't a large number.. it's a good number if you're using a controller - which this

game obviously supports being released on consoles and all - but don't fret.. you actually

control a party of characters.. that you instantly swap between on keypress.. and they'll have

their own 3 abilities cgiseb from their own list.

In total you'll have access to 4 party members at one time.. that you pick and choose from

a roster of up to 14.

So really.. you have 12 abilities chosen from probably a pool of 100 or more

On top of this - each party member has a quasi class - and different weapons and armor they

can equip that has the full action RPG treatment in regards to rarity and randomness and affixes

and gemming.. etc.

During combat they also have their own health and resource bars.. and can die.. as well

as interact with things and people in different ways than other party members.

.. and I think most interesting .. and vital to the games theme - your main character is

a Devourer - kind of this undead spectre, lich thing.

And when he is active - you actually flip the game world into a shadow realm kind of

thing.

Which is populated with different enemies and NPCs.. and in some cases - the map itself

is different.. or the Devourer interacts differently.

So he may be able to move through a grate.. being all ghostly.. but he can't pull a lever

in the mortal realm.. and the game is designed around this.

This plays out in combat as well with most enemy attacks either existing in the mortal

realm or the shadow realm.. and so flipping between them gives you like this super power

- where you can kind of phase out of one realm .. maybe your shift to the shadow realm to

avoid damage from an arrow coming your way .. then use some abilities that mess with

the mortal realm while you're there - as an aside many of the abilities in the game have

persistent effects so the realms do feel connected.. or maybe you shift and find yourself swarmed

by hostile spirits and what have you.. or see some spirit NPC that has a quest or a

path only accessible this way or used to solve many puzzles designed to go back and forth

between.. and in a literal way it just adds another dimension to everything and another

plane to explore.

In combat - especially once you have a fuller party - it's very satisfying to be switching

between characters to suit a specific monster - or combo'ing abilities from different characters.

There are quite a few ways to better specialize characters for the role they play in your

party- there is the gearing system, stat allocation, talents, skill selection and powering up and

the game has some very unique party members with very unique kits... and allow you to

really bust out these party builds very well... and

the idea that the identity of the character attached to an ability can force your hand

in how you build and how you play... you may like traps.. but that's attached to a glass

cannon character so how do you deal with swapping him out and having him survive to lay them..

and there are lots of answers to that question and others.

And the bosses of which there are like 60 .. tend to be less tank and spank and more

strategy oriented - in fact the game is not very hack and slash at all- you rarely are

taking on hordes of enemies .. its slower and more methodical.. more real time, tactical...

and really... more classic RPG.

It kind of feels like a middle ground between a cRPG like say Dragon Age Origins and a hack

and slash.

And this hyrbid nature carries over to the rest of the gameplay also - many more quests

than you're used to - fully voice narrative and side quests - moral choices - multiple

endings... even the roster of players for your party.. you can miss them, they might

be unavailable to pick up due to prior choices - the non combat stuff isn't on the same level

as recent cRPGs but there is a little more role playing meat on this games than you'd

think just looking at it.

With a controller the game plays really smooth - you may know I'm a terrible person and opt

to use a controller whenever it makes sense and this is the first aRPG that I prefer it

with.

The story is rather fleshed out with some hit or miss voice acting - and

doesn't bog you down with text and tons of tiny details unless you go looking for that

.. that much like the rest of the game has a second dimension as you choose from 3 different

mortal heroes to have their own kind of parallel main story to play through as well.. it's

interesting for sure.

The duality of the game in specific areas really impressed me..

I really like dark world, light world... kind of mechanics in games.

Until the game comes out - the developers don't want anything after Chapter 1 shown

- so it may have looked a bit samey but I'll show some official images and videos they've

release of other areas - I just don't think they want to spoil much as it's a single player

narrative driven RPG.

Getting right down to it .. obviously .. this game isn't going to win Game of the Year.

But I feel like I keep having to say this when talking about RPGs on the channel .. RPG

lovers are always on the hunt for new titles - because we finish with games.. and we like

that, we want games that end - and so we're constantly on the look out for new stuff to

play.

And this.. is just putting something on your radar that I can earnestly say I enjoyed..

although it didn't hurt that I really enjoyed Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms years ago as well.

That will do it for me here.. until next time, this is Fevir.

Peace.

Arsenal news: Unai Emery hailed by Gunners legend for doing what Arsene Wenger didn't - Duration: 3:43.

That's the opinion of club legend Ian Wright. The Spaniard hooked Granit Xhaka at half-time of their defeat to Chelsea and took off Mesut Ozil with 20 minutes remaining although the Gunners were level at that point

Emery hailed afterwards that he was happy with Ozil's effort and work-rate and declared that both his and Xhaka's withdrawals were tactical decisions with the Swiss midfielder having been on a yellow card

Arsenal have suffered back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea in their opening two Premier League games - their worst ever start to a campaign since the division's rebirth in 1992

But while Emery has come in for some criticism for his role in their losses, with Arsenal struggling to adapt to Emery's philosophy of playing out from the back and utilising a high defensive line, he has been praised for his ruthlessness with substitutions

By contrast Arsenal manager Wenger was often criticised for not taking off players failing to contribute with the Frenchman accused of misplaced loyalty over some of the players in his squad

And Wright, who played for the club in Wenger's first two of 22 seasons in north London, praised Emery's different way of thinking

"I think the other day rightly at half-time, which you may not have seen under Arsene Wenger, he [Xhaka] got taken off," Wright told The Debate on Sky Sports

"He's frightening me at the moment if it [the ball] goes to him because his confident seems shot

"What was good and encouraging was that he made those substitutions, big substitutions for me

"Xhaka would have stayed on under Wenger and so would Ozil. "And what that's said now in that dressing is that no one's going to be safe

'If you don't do what we need you to do, you're coming off'. And I was pleased to see that

" But Wright worries that Emery needs to add more fresh faces - following the five signings he made in his first summer at the club - in order for the squad to fully adjust to his methods

"It's going to be a massive problem for him because I don't know if he's going to get the kind of monies that he's going to need to make the kind of signings that are going to, hopefully, help him in the positions he's going to need," the former striker continued

"I was very surprised with the goals that were conceded and the way they were conceded - the high line with no pressure on the ball

Those things for me have got to be eradicated. "Then you've got to get yourself to the next transfer window and then you can get someone who might be able to come in and implement what you want to do more

"Because I think you're going to need a few players to come in who are used to playing like that because I don't think a lot of them are

" Arsenal return to action against West Ham tomorrow (3pm) looking for their first three points of the season against a Hammers side also winless under new management so far
