8 Beautiful Sea Creatures That Glow In The Dark - Duration: 4:50.

8 Beautiful Sea Creatures That Glow In The Dark.

Number 8.

Atolla is deep-sea dwelling jellyfish is known for its "burglar alarm."

When attacked, it sets off a brilliant light display that can be seen for 300 feet.

Researchers think the fireworks are intended to attract something even larger and fiercer.

If the new predator takes an interest in the jelly's attacker, it might be able to escape.

Number 7.

Tomopteris is one of the bioluminescent animals that are yellow-luminescent.

Only a few known marine animals used to glow yellow.

Their glowing mechanism is not clear but one thing is clear it does not glow with the help

of light-emitting compound known as Luciferin.

When disturbed, Tomopteris is known to release bioluminescent particles from their two different

organs.

It is believed that tomopteris used this to distract predators.

Talking about the size, they can grow upto few centimeters in length.

Number 6.

This kind of jellyfish (colonial jellyfish), which can grow to about 12 inches, controls

its elevation in the water with a gas-filled float.

Gas is released through a pore in the bottom of its float, which is refilled through secretions

from a special gland.

Its luminescence is a mystery.

Scientists think it startles predators, but it's just a best guess.

Number 5.

Bathocyroe Fosteri is a comb jelly usually seen in deep sea waters all around the globe.

However, they are abundant near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

It can reach up to 2 inches in height.

It is one of the bioluminescent animals named after pilot Dudley Foster.

He is the one who collected the first specimen of Bathocyroe Fosteri.

Whenever disturbed, it has an ability to produce light through its tissues by producing right

chemicals that will emit flashlights from its chromatophores.

It will definitely reduce the probability of attacking predators and act as an adaptation

for Bathocyroe Fosteri.

Number 4.

Also known as "comb jellies," ctenophora emit a blue or green light that can only be seen

in the dark.

They also secrete ink that luminesces most brightly in the smaller bodies of young comb

jellies.

A rainbow effect is created when light scatters through the distinctive comb-like tentacles

of the ctenophore.

Number 3.

Native to the islands of Hawaii and the Central Pacific Ocean, the Bobtail Squid uses bioluminescence

to camouflage itself by matching its underside to the shade of light illuminating the water

above it.

Though the light is generated by the colonies of luminous bacteria housed in the squid's

organs, the host squid can control the direction and the brightness of the flashes of light.

Because their ability to glow allows them to go about their nights undetected, they

tend to spend the days concealed in the sand.

If they are disturbed, they will come out and try to blend in while wearing a coat of

sand.

If they are found out, they'll turn themselves completely white and leave behind a cloud

of ink in an attempt to escape.

Number 2.

The crystal jellyfish, or Aequorea victoria, is found off the west coast of North America

and was discovered for the first time in Britain's waters in 2009.

It produces intense flashes of blue light by releasing calcium and its usually clear

membrane sometimes glows an eerie green.

This jellyfish is considered one of the most influential bioluminescent creatures due to

its usefulness in scientific research and the potential to use its light proteins in

cancer detection.

Number 1.

This particular jellyfish, which scientists say is a hydromedusa and belongs to the genus

Crossota, was spotted by members of the National Oceanic

and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) during a currently ongoing exploration of the Mariana

Trench.

Spotted around the aptly named Engima Seamount area, this little alien-like creature was

found hunting for food over 12,000 feet below the surface of the ocean.

The hydromedusa's long tentacles are even and extended outward and the bell is motionless,

suggests an ambush predation mode.

Mjekejeke on his queen: She's helped me through the dark days - Duration: 3:10.

Mjekejeke on his queen: She's helped me through the dark days

Mjekejeke on his queen: She's helped me through the dark days.

Actor Sipho Manzini may get those awkward questions about Petronella but the star says the real queen of his heart is his wife.

Sipho may be in the spotlight for his role as Mjekejeke on Mzansi Magic's popular soapie The Queen but he prefers to keep his private life out of the spotlight.  Still he and his wife are inseparable and the star told TshisaLIVE that he owes a lot of his happiness and peace to her influence in his life.

"She is really shy but such an amazing person.

An angel.

She is always listening and offering advice.

I am grateful because she has seen me at my worst and still supports me.

She has helped me through many dark days." Sipho recounted an experience where he was struggling with "some of the usual frustrations of the industry" and was contemplating possibly giving up.

He said his missus sat him down and gave him some perspective.

"This (acting) is my passion and she knows that.

I was really down and she knew just what to say.

She asked me why I was doing it (acting), why I wanted to do it and if it made me happy.

She told me to follow my heart but I knew it was her way of telling me that I could do it," he said with a laugh.

Thank goodness malume listened to his missus because can you imagine life without  Mjekejeke?  "I am really glad to be on The Queen.

I have been on other productions in my career but this honestly feels like a breakthrough role for me.

It is so great to be part of the show and to play (the role of) Mjekejeke.

And all those questions about his on-screen wife Petronella? "My wife doesn't mind it at all.

She laughs with me and goes along with it.".

I'll Be Gone In The Dark - Duration: 3:43.

Hi guys.

So, I just recently finished reading I'll be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara.

Now, this is a true crime book about the Golden State Killer, which was a person in California

who raped over 50 people and I think killed over 12 people.

It started off as burglar and escalated to attacking women, attacking couples, and killing

people.

So, I've been hearing a lot about this book and I've been wanting to read it for a long

time.

I"m not really a huge true crime reader.

I have read In Cold Blood and a couple of other ones, but I read those for a class,

not just because I wanted to.

Even though, In Cold Blood was pretty good.

Anyway.

So, there's been a lot of hype about this book.

I didn't know anything about the Golden State killer before reading this book.

I don't live in California.

I live in Connecticut so I'm all the way on the other side of the country.

I also heard, after reading this book, that this book helped catch the killer.

Now, whether or not that is true, I don't know.

Some people say yes.

Some people say no.

Michelle McNamara had a true crime blog.

My true crime diary or something like that.

She started to get into true crime because when she was a teenager somebody was killed

on her street, or around where she lived and it was never solved so she got interested

in it that way.

She died before this book was completed, which I think contributes to some of the problems

in this book.

I enjoyed this book.

I found the first half was very very quick and very interesting to read.

But then as soon as you hit the middle to about 2/3 into it, it gets very, very boring

and very hard to get through.

It's a lot of the same things over and over again.

There's no new information, and it never really comes to any type of conclusion, which I understand

because at the time this book was published they did not catch the Golden State Killer.

He has since been caught and is in jail and is awaiting trial and all that stuff.

It was disjointed in parts.

Some of this was written in present tense and past tense and the tenses tended to switch

mid sentence.

Also , who ever you were talking to.

Another thing that I thought was kind of odd for a true crime novel was that this seemed

half memoir and half a crime novel.

You learn, i would say, probably more about her own life than you did about the Golden

State killer.

But I think that there was too much of her own life in there for a true crime book.

I don't know if that's because she died before it was written and it was finished by her

husband, who is Patten Oswalt, and her research assistant.

So maybe in honor of her memory they made it interspersed with her own memoir-ish kind

of thing.

I have to say I gave this three stars on goodreads because of the fact that it gets extremely

boring and the further you get into it the less and less interesting it becomes.

I didn't even want to finish reading the ending, even though I did finish it.

And it was just very very hard to get through once you hit that halfway mark.

Also, I heard that they are making a HBO mini series or documentary out of this book or

something like that.

Some people say that this book is what helped finally catch the Golden State Killer.

And some people say no it is not.

So, if anybody else has read this book let me know what you think and I will see you

guys next time.
