Auto news on Youtube Aug 22 2018

My name's Tom Madigan I'm a commander

with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office

was requested to respond

to Redding,

California, Shasta County to

assist with disaster response

efforts after the tragic

Carr fire.

We've been utilizing UAVs for the

past few years

and so we've been called to a number

of devastating scenes.

For example the

Santa Rosa

and Sonoma fires that occurred last year.

Initially,

Cal Fire Air Boss was very

apprehensive about letting us come in.

I'm talking to me lead planes, he's talking to the tankers, I'm talking

to my helicopters, talking to the incident commanders down on the

ground, I'm talking to divisions and branches.

Once we proved

a safety track record

I think now they feel a lot more at ease

and more willing to,

one,

let us in to start operating

and two, to widen our missions.

First thing we needed to do was

get a waiver from the FAA

to fly with Cal Fire's

TFR. And we arrived

with four of our drone teams

and we were supported by

UAV teams from Contra Costa

County

and also Menlo Park fire.

I worked for the city of Redding GIS division.

We were on the phone with these guys,

Alameda County sheriff

and Menlo Park fire

and they were ready at a moments notice and

here we are at the end of the day

with data.

We've been assisting by creating 360

degree panoramic videos

and photos of the

neighborhoods that have been devastated.

We've also been doing a mapping

missions where we're creating orthomosaic

and 3-D maps

and models of neighborhoods that have been devastated

up here.

The usefulness of the maps

and the images that we're getting are

pretty powerful

and give decision makers kind

of situational awareness very rapidly.

Its one thing to get fire perimeters on

a nightly basis, but when you

can deploy UAV technology

and get 360 views of this nature and then put that out to the public

in short order.

You're talking about the epitome of rapid

response in my mind.

Within about a five minute span of time

we can hit multiple locations

quickly as we first get here

and start giving them that

aerial perspective that they don't have.

I think that drone technology

is really going to

enhance the way in which first

responders do their jobs.

We are the boots on the ground.

We can go out and do the mapping

missions

but we need help on the backend

processing the data making sense

of it all. We have public private partnerships

with Scholar Farms.

Airbus has been supporting us.

Hangar 360, Pix4D

and

a company called Survae.

I really appreciate the opportunity to come out

and support the team.

I think this is the future

of really disaster response that you have

a digital first responder team

that comes in and captures the data.

We saw it in Sonoma County,

we're seeing here and it's the kind of data

that we're gonna need in recovery.

So we

have our utilities electric utility water utility.

This is a terrible situation.

But what I will say I know

on behalf of our team we're

honored to help out in

in these type of disasters.

These are so tragic.

You know we walk around here

you see lives just completely

uprooted.

It's as you can see here it's apocalyptic.

These are beautiful areas where

a lot of residents

and homes are within the

trees and it did just devastates

communities when these fires take

off

and there's very little time to get out.

We met a woman yesterday who had lost

her childhood home

and she was so thankful that we were

there

and gave us a hug

and she just told us that she

was glad that her family survived.

And they can rebuild.

My street in particular is a small cul-de-sac of tens homes.

Nine out of ten homes are gone.

I lived here on Footbridge Court. Total loss. Palm trees are still

there, they were probably lit up during the fire.

You can still see my barbecue.

These disasters seem to be becoming

more and more frequent.

The other thing that we're trying to do more

and more of is bringing in other

UAV teams,

either fire or law enforcement

and expose them to this

experience because they're going

to be involved in it more

and more in the future.

It's just been an amazing coordination.

I think we're learning a lot of lessons

here unfortunately

and really we'll be better prepared for

for fires to come. Definately.

I mean this is the kind of things that people lose

sleep over wondering if there home is still there.

If we put their minds at ease,

hopefully to show them that their home made it.

In other cases at least

let them know right away

what the status is so they're not wondering.

It's huge.

Corporate Landlords: The Fight for Affordable Housing in California • BRAVE NEW FILMS - Duration: 8:35.

-It is creating the product that makes memories.

-The hot water heater was leaking.

-Creating affordable places for people to live.

-They want to increase my rent.

-It's very important for us that we're able to deliver great service to all of our residents.

-The roof was leaking.

-And when it rains it floods.

- We had an issue with mice.

We had an issue with the heater.

- My hope is the folks here at Blackstone, Invitation Homes, and our investors can go

and see families with affordable housing.

- But it turned into a nightmare.

- The rent is too damn high!

The rent, the rent is too damn high!

The rent, the rent is too damn high!

- I am a tenant of Invitation Homes, and I want to repeal Costa-Hawkins.

- Costa-Hawkins is a law in California that makes it so single-family homes cannot be

put under rent control even in jurisdictions that have rent control ordinances.

- In 1995, the legislature passed the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act,

which placed three key limits on local rent control.

First, it said that local rent control cannot apply to any single-family homes.

Second, local rent control cannot apply to any newly built housing completed on or after

February 1, 1995.

And finally, Costa Hawkins required what is known as vacancy decontrol, which means that

a landlord must be free to reset rents to market rates

when transitioning from one tenant to the next.

- About one-third of the rental units in California are single-family buildings.

When I signed the lease in 2012 to become a tenant,

I was excited about the opportunity of being able to rent to own.

My husband and myself, we live here.

And my daughter when she's home from school, she lives here as well.

We just had a great, you know, existence here as a family.

- I live in a single-family home.

Invitation Homes owns it, backed by Blackstone.

-Stephen Schwarzman is the current CEO of Blackstone.

Blackstone is a private equity firm, and what Blackstone did in around 2011 was create a

company called Invitation Homes.

Invitation Homes originally acquired foreclosed properties, discounted properties

with the intention of one day selling them when the market went up,

and realized that they could actually rent them and make pretty good profits.

- So Stephen Schwarzman is worth about $12 billion dollars.

Last year alone, he raked in $787 million dollars at his position at Blackstone.

- He has a Napoleon complex.

Likes to put his name on things, like libraries,

and tried to put his name on his high school and failed.

He also has a huge love of houses and mansions.

He has a mansion in the Hamptons, Saint-Tropez, a beachfront villa in Jamaica.

- The Costa-Hawkins Act ties the hands of local governments

from dealing with "The Blackstone Problem."

Since the mortgage crisis of 2008, large Wall Street financial institutions,

like the global private equity firm Blackstone, have gobbled up millions of foreclosed single-family homes,

and California is ground zero in the Wall-Street-absentee-corporate-landlord trend.

- Stephen Schwarzman is a corporate landlord.

- These corporate landlords are trying to squeeze

as much money as they can in order to generate returns.

- It was just the perfect house to have a childcare business.

But in 2013, we discovered that the area I was using for a playground

was contaminated with lead.

I notified the property owner, and they didn't do anything about it.

- Corporate landlords have a whole set of investors that they're accountable to.

- Stephen Schwarzman, he is a 19 percent shareholder in Blackstone.

- And what that means is that, they also have to generate continually rising returns for their investors.

- The majority of the money that he made was as a shareholder in Blackstone.

- Because of the negligence of Blackstone, I lost the family childcare.

- Today, you can rent a home in a neighborhood

that would have otherwise not been a choice for you.

- I get a letter saying that they are going to increase my rent in July.

An increase of $700.

- Costa-Hawkins doesn't allow rent control to expand to single-family homes like mine.

When my first rent increase came, it was a letter with a $500 dollars a month increase.

And I just really thought they had the wrong person, so I thought, maybe let me go ahead

and contact them and, you know, get this letter to the right person,

and the right person was me.

And I explained, "If you knew what I lived in, the area I lived in, you wouldn't be increasing it.

You'd pay me to stay there."

The area I live in is called, Death Valley, because of the killings that take place.

- Stephen Schwarzman, his 70th birthday party he spent three million,

and for his 60th birthday party, he spent five million.

- We all want to get to that point where we can have what we want.

If I was a little girl, and I dreamed about having camels at my birthday party,

I'd like to know that one day I could.

But I don't want to do it on the backs of hurting people.

With all the stuff that's going on, he has to have an ear on how many people are being

put out on the streets.

- Of course I don't think it was fair because they were the reasons why I lost my income.

- I interpret that as a profit-making model, right?

They are charging people more for less.

Not only are they the largest landlord in the country,

but they're one of the worst landlords in the country.

- Companies like Invitation Homes rely on Costa-Hawkins to be able to raise the rents

each year, which makes it harder and harder for everyday people to afford the rents.

- Repealing Costa-Hawkins would give local government the ability to reduce a great deal of human suffering.

Rising rents have caused widespread eviction, displacement, and disruption of families' lives.

Housing insecurity and instability, eviction, and involuntary moving has serious and harmful,

physical and mental health effects on adults and children alike.

Children who move frequently don't do as well in school.

Housing insecurity and instability hurts workers performance on the job

- Blackstone, you can't hide! We can see your greedy side!

- You don't rent a home to move away.

- It doesn't matter to them, they just want, you know, they want their rent money.

- For most Americans, they don't know but Blackstone may soon become their new landlord.

-Blackstone, you can't hide! We can see your greedy side!

-Repeal Costa-Hawkins!

-Repeal Costa-Hawkins!

- We got to get rid of Costa-Hawkins!

Marcus Williams, Saints running game and more from California - Duration: 3:35.

hello everyone Jeff Duncan along with Josh Katzenstein and we were at the Jack

Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa California

where the Saints and Chargers have just concluded a joint practice against each

other about 2 and 1/2 hour workout and Josh you were here last year when these

same two teams went at it to this very site and it seemed to be after talking

to the players they feel a little better about how things went today but what did

you think well I agree with the players just because last year it was a week

earlier during the preseason process so you know now that they have two

preseason games under their belt the Saints have a much better idea of what

roles players are gonna be playing you know how to put guys in the right spots

and really they have a much better camaraderie as a team and I think that's

something that you know we knew even before today's practice just because

last year there were so many question marks about which rookies were gonna

start which you know poorly performing veterans were on their way out so I do

think the Chargers actually looked better today now don't freak out at home

I mean it's just one practice and I'm sure we said the exact same thing last

year but there were definitely you know more positive signs or take more good

takeaways from the Saints this year than last year

yeah and Sean Payton alluded to the fact that at this time of year ago neither

one of these teams was very well thought of around the league and both of them

ended up having decent seasons of course the Chargers came on after a slow start

and look there's been a lot of these joint workouts around the NFL they get

very intense sometimes a fights break out we saw a couple of incidents today

where the intensity boiled up and it got close but I thought overall it was

really just a lot of good work and a lot of good competition yeah absolutely the

closest thing to a fight that I saw was when you know both teams actually did

the you know pose for a picture after getting a turnover the chargers did at

first and then the Saints did it and then both of the defense is sort of like

came together faked as if they were gonna fight and then it just turned into

a love fest and I'll actually have a story on that up soon at NOLA.com just

about you know the Chargers actually claim that they started it because they

were doing it in training camp last year but the Saints obviously did it in a

game first but yeah you're right I mean I know Michael Thomas you know and

defensive back you know had a little stare down little stare yeah but I mean

it was it was nothing crazy and I think it helps that you know you have two

coaches that are familiar with you with them with with each other

because Sean Payton and Anthony Lynn were on the same staff with the Cowboys and

then obviously you know Drew Brees and Philip Rivers had this long-standing

relationship so as competitive as practice well as tensions weren't that

high in a few highlights just to mention Marcus Williams

with an interception on a tip drill Drew Brees a low light through a pick six in

the two-minute offense but I thought overall the running game for the Saints

which has been a strength throughout the preseason was a strength again today a

lot of nice runs from Alvin Kamara and for Mark Ingram and I think that's

gonna be something that the Saints hang their hat on all year with that really

strong offensive line definitely one one thing to consider those I thought Mike

Williams looked great for the Chargers you know the Saints defensive backs had

a little bit of an issue with him you know so obviously they need to figure

out how to defend a big body you know receiver before they show off against

Julio Jones and Mike Evans one other highlight though David Grunfeld the man

behind the camera I would definitely look for his slide show after this after

we get done here because he was running all over these two fields getting the

best stuff so definitely check that out at NOLA.com great stuff of Drew

Brees signing a lot of autographs afterward obviously Drew Brees very

popular started his professional career here lives right down the road in Del

Mar right that's it for Josh Katzenstein Jeff Duncan and David Grünfeld check out

all of our work on NOLA.com and we'll continue it tomorrow right here from

Costa Mesa thanks for reading

Verizon reportedly throttled California fire department during great Mendocino Complex wildfire - Duration: 1:57.

Most cell phone users understand that unlimited data plans aren't truly unlimited.

you can technically use up as much data as you want, but past a certain point, you'll

usually encounter speed throttling.

A Santa Clara fire department vehicle, the "OES 5262," recently had its data speeds throttled

by Verizon after it cruised past its 25GB usage soft cap.

According to Santa Clara Fire Chief Anthony Bowden, this vehicle is responsible for facilitating

communications between emergency responders and coordinating "government resources" in

connection with the Mendocino wildfire.

Bowden's staff contacted Verizon to rectify the situation, and while the company did confirm

that the throttling occurred, it reportedly refused to restore them to an "essential"

data speed unless they switched to a new plan.

Buss suggested a $99 plan that would charge the fire department $8 per gigabyte after

20GB had been used.

Ars Technica says the fire department decided to opt for this plan, but it isn't accepting

Verizon's policies without

a fight.
