What are the top 5 things that I need to stay away from in my 20's?
By the time you turn 20 years old, you've spent 3 years not knowing you were alive, another 8 being oblivious to the world, 2 going through puberty, and 4 in high school.
The final 2 years could be considered to be the ONLY YEARS YOU WERE ALIVE. So as a 20 year old, you're actually 2 years old as an adult. You're life expectancy is around 80 years, give or take.
That means at 20, you're a mere 1/30 of the way through your adult life. Stay away from people who say life is short. For you, it's VERY long, and you have time to do almost anything.
Even if you're starting from scratch. By the time you turn 22 and graduate from college, you will have DOUBLED your education from the first 18 years of your life.
Before you die, you'll have time do that another TWELVE TIMES making you the most well-rounded and wisest individual on the planet. You'll also have time to regress to an 8th grade level.
Stay away from people who think learning stops when school ends.
America is only one country out of many, democracy is only one form of government out of many, and whatever social class you are part of is only one out of several.
Stay away from the notion that your superiors or authorities have it all figured out.
Expand your horizons and always try to look through the eyes of others. Not necessarily so you can help them or empathize with them, but at least so you can see another world that you're not part of.
Social influences can be much stronger in the adult world than even they were in school. In school you were told stay away from drugs and alcohol. As an adult, it's much worse:.
stay away from "dick-waving contests." Years of peoples lives can be wasted by trying to prove that they are awesome.
Just find a way to tell yourself that you're a winner whether others believe it or not and be happy. This isn't meant to be some BS self-help advice.
It's meant to spare you from spending 20 or 30 years pursuing something that you later find out you never cared about all because you wanted someone to tell you that you were worth something or were the "best version" of something that all of you once thought was cool.
It's an utter waste. And while you're at it, stay away from drugs altogether. If you're tired, caffeine can make you feel good temporarily, but there's probably a reason you're tired.
You might be stressed out, not like your job, or feel cornered by the adult world. Address that first, and if you still need a pick-me-up, fine. Because at least then you know it's a short term solution.
Move in the direction of fixing the underlying issue instead of relying on a substance. I don't care if it's white sugar or white powder, legal or illegal. If you need something outside of yourself to feel good, proceed with caution.
